Manchester United kick off their 2018/19 campaign against Leicester City, a team they have had a lot of recent success against, especially at Old Trafford. The Red Devils have won 8 of their last 9 home games against The Foxes with the only dropped points in this time coming in Leicester’s miracle season when they won the league. A season that seems very much in the past now for Leicester despite it only being 2 seasons ago. The last time Leicester won away on the red side of Manchester, Marcus Rashford was only 3 months old to the day.
This is a game that usually sees plenty of goals, with Leicester’s heroic 5-3 over Van Gaal’s united 4 years ago springing to mind. In fact, there have been 39 goals in the last 11 games in this encounter, holding an average of 3.5 goals per game. United always seem to start their season well, winning comfortably against the lesser teams and it seems over the christmas period and so on that they struggle to pick up wins.
If United are to seriously challenge their arch rivals in blue, they will have to adopt that level of consistency and performances from key players that all title winning sides have. United haven’t won the premier league for 5 years. City and Chelsea have both won it twice since then. That is too long for a club of this stature. The bookmakers have them finishing 3rd in their predictions and odds, behind City and Liverpool. It will come as no surprise that this would have to be my guess as well. United still don’t look like the team they are notoriously known to be: fast flowing football, energy and verve, goalscorers and creative players.
Leicester of course remain a certified premier league side for now, with next to no pressure on them heading into their new season. Puel’s men will again be looking for a top half finish after finishing 9th last season but 12th the one before. This should be an entertaining if the stats provided replicate themselves in this one to kick off the premier league season. United should surely win here with their big name players surely having to perform consistently for the remainder of the season.
Maguire and Vardy are doubts after not training with the team for long enough after England’s world cup heroics.
There are doubts over the fitness of Lukaku, Pogba and Lingard.
Potential United Starting XI: De Gea, Valencia, Bailly, Smalling, Young, Matic, Pogba, Mata, Lingard, Sanchez,
Potential Leicester Starting XI: Schmeichel, Simpson, Morgan, Evans, Chilwell, Iborra, Silva, Gray, Albrighton, Okazaki, Ihenacho.
Head To Head
- Leicester have only beaten United once in 20 years, a run of 20 games.
- Leicester have only won once at Old Trafford in the premier league era (0-1 in 1998).
- BTTS in 8 of the last 11 games between the two teams.
- United have won 8 of their last 9 home ties against Leicester (Drawing in Leicester’s title winning season in 15/16).
- Average of 3.6 goals per game in the last 10 premier league ties.
Key Stats & Facts
- 4 of Leicester’s 5 pre-season games saw BTTS, with 4 of United’s 6 games seeing BTTS.
- United 1/2
- Draw 16/5
- Leicester 7/1
United should be too strong for The Foxes here and with recent records majorly favouring the home side it would be hard to back against them.
