Many rolled their eyes when this fixture was chosen as a game to be shown live and I was party to that group. It’s hardly a fixture that inspires, which is what the FA Cup is all about. That being said, it doesn’t mean there isn’t a bet to be had and I’ll be looking to find a winning angle.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has a 100% record since he took charge for the rest of the season. It wasn’t the most gruelling of opening fixtures for the Norwegian but it’s the style of play that’s impressed the United faithful. Ole has let the shackles off and it’s brought the best out of the likes of Marcus Rashford, Paul Pogba and Anthony Martial. The Red Devils have covered the -1 handicap in all of their last 4 games and many will be expecting that to be the case again over second tier opposition.
As one Portuguese José departed Old Trafford one came in at the Madejski. Reading went left field for their appointment of José Gomes and fans will be hoping the former Rio Ave gaffer can turn fortunes around. The FA cup may not be his number 1 priority though, the Berkshire boys lie second bottom of the Championship table and league survival could pull rank over any kind of cup distraction.
The Royals are in no kind of form either with failure to win in ten. They’ve lacked creativity, goals and an exciting attacking approach for a while. They seldom create a high volume of presentable chances and it’s not seen an immediate change since Gomes came in as head honcho.
Solskjaer is likely to rotate with Romelu Lukaku, Alexis Sanchez, Marouane Felliani, Fred, Andreas Periera, Matteo Darmian and Sergio Romero.
Youngster Mason Greenwood could also get his senior debut for the club.
Reading are without both Tyler Blackett and Leandro Bacuna who are suspended. Said Ezatohali and Jordan Orbita are also doubts for the away side.
Potential Man Utd Starting XI: Romero, Darmian, Lindelof, Jones, Dalot, Felliani, Fred, Pereira, Greenwood, Sanchez, Lukaku.
Potential Reading Starting XI: Jaakola, Yiadom, Moore, O’Shea, Richards, Rinomhota, Kelly, Swift, Barrow, McLeary, Meite.
- Manchester United have won their last 4 in a row.
- Reading have drew 5 and lost 5 in their last 10 championship games.
- Reading have won just 1 away game this season.
- Reading have failed to score in 5 of their last 6 away games.
- Manchester United – 1/8
- Draw – 9/1
- Reading – 28/1
It should be a routine home win but prices on the home side are prohibitive as expected. I’m going to utilise a punting method called ‘dutching’. Dutching essentially means splitting your stakes over two bets; it’s usually used on correct scores and that’s what I’m going to propose here.
We’re going to back the 3-0 and 4-0 home wins at 6/1 and 7/1 respectively. Dutching both scorelines with equal stakes gives around a 14/5 shot cumulatively and they look the two most likely results in my eyes.
Reading are woeful on the road and are struggling to score past championship defences never mind upper class premier league sides. United are free scoring at the minute and players coming in have places to fight for so I’m expecting them to be right at it.
