Two teams well fancied in the promotion market meet under the lights in Teeside on Friday night in a game that should be an interesting battle of styles.

Middlesbrough have had a strong start to the season under Tony Pulis kicking off with a point from a tough place to go in Millwall followed up by three consecutive wins to nil. We all know that Pulis focuses on a solid base as a key component to his side and recent results have reflected that, they tend to be strong at home and I’d want to have them on side here. Boro have seemingly lost out to Aston Villa for the loan signing Yannick Bolasie who would’ve provided them with much needed pace out wide after the departure of Adama Traore to Wolves. However, the fact Pulis has been public about his desire to get a winger in on loan may fire up the current crop that are there.

West Brom surprisingly opened their Championship campaign with a home loss to Bolton. Baggies dominated that fixture with 70% possession, more corners and shots than their counterparts however Bolton were clinical and defended superbly under pressure. Since then Darren Moore has seen his troops free scoring putting four past Norwich and seven past a beleaguered QPR. Their options going forward are frightening at this level and seemingly Moore has given them license to go for it, link up play at the top of the pitch has been excellent. The Black Country boys also possess a set piece threat with Chris Brunt over the ball and the likes of Ahmed Hegazi coming up from the back. All that been said WBA have conceded in every league game so far this season and they’ll be up against a much more stringent backline here.

Team News

Rudy Gestede remains sidelined for the hosts but new signing Jordan Hugill and influential centre half Daniel Ayala are in contention after getting 45 minutes in a friendly with Hartlepool during the week.

West Brom have no new injury concerns from the weekend.

Potential Middlesbrough XI: Randolph, Shotton, Fry, Flint, Friend, Howson, Clayton, Wing, Downing, Braithwaite, Assombalonga.

Potential West Brom XI: Johnstone, Bartley, Hegazi, Adarabiayo, Phillips, Brunt, Livermore, Gibbs, Barnes, Rodriguez, Gayle.

Head To Head

  • There’s not a lot to choose between these two over their 76 meetings with each other. Middlesbrough have the slight upper hand winning 33 whereas West Brom have won 29. The remaining 16 games have ended all square.

Stats & Facts

  • Middlesbrough have won 9 out of their last 11 championship home games, with 8 of those having two or more goals.
  • Current Boro boss Tony Pulis spent 2 years at West Brom guiding them to 13th and 10th place finishes in the premier league.

Betting Odds

  • Middlesbrough – 6/4
  • Draw – 23/10
  • West Brom – 21/10

The Verdict

Despite the current goal scoring form of West Brom, I’d want to get Middlesbrough on side here. Pulis knows all about the Baggies after his stint as manager there and he will look to stifle their attacking threat and I believe their defence is capable of doing so to a degree, however a clean sheet could be a tough task. West Brom will see a point here as a good result but whether they alter their attacking philosophy due to playing against a stronger team we will have to see.

After looking around for an attractive angle, I’ve found a 9/10 shot that appeals and that is Middlesbrough ‘double chance’ & over 1.5 goals. This bet would require Boro to win or draw in a game featuring two or more goals. Over 1.5 goals has landed in 7/8 of these clubs respective fixtures this season and with Middlesbrough strong at home I think they shouldn’t lose this fixture.

Another stats based play to consider is the corner markets, these teams fixtures this season have averaged out at over 11 corners for both teams. The odds against price of 15/13 for over 10.5 corners looks an attractive price.

Recommended Bets

  • Middlesbrough ‘double chance’ & over 1.5 goals – 9/10 (188bet)
  • Over 10.5 corners – 15/13 (10bet)
