Borussia Monchengladbach will be looking to continue their fine home form against the struggling Nurnberg on Tuesday evening.
The home side have started the season strongly after a disappointing 17/18 campaign which saw them finish ninth. After 15 games, Monchengladbach sit pretty in second, above Bayern but still nine points behind league leaders Borussia Dortmund.
Their home form has been a big contributor to their excellent start, winning all their games at Borussia-Park this season, but their highlight has to be the 3-0 demolishing of Bayern at the Allianz back in October. With Dortmund around the corner, Nurnberg at home couldn’t have been a better midweek fixture for Dieter Hecking, who gets a chance to rest some of his most influential players after what was a poor performance in a 0-0 draw with Hoffenheim on Saturday (Hoffenheim had an xG of 4.03).
Newly-promoted Nurnberg have endured a tough start in their return to the top-flight. They began the season well with wins over Hannover and Dusseldorf, but haven’t won in their last nine, leaving them in 17th but only a point from safety. They have also been on the end of some drubbings, conceding an average of four goals in away games so far.
Lars Stindl and Raffael picked up knocks at Hoffenheim on Saturday and are doubts for this fixture. Defender Tony Jantschke did not feature either on the weekend and is also a doubt whilst Christoph Kramer is considered ‘day-to-day’ and may return to the bench on Tuesday. With a top of the table clash against Dortmund on Friday, I’d expect Dieter Hecking to protect some of his key men.
As for the away side, Hanno Behrens is likely to miss out with an abdominal injury whilst Enrico Valentini is back in contention to feature on Tuesday evening. Midfielder Eduard Lowen is also back in training after a spell out with a knee injury.
Potential Monchengladbach Starting XI: Sommer, Elvedi, Beyer, Wendt, Benes, Zakaria, Neuhaus, Hermann, Plea, Johnson
Potential Nurnberg Starting XI: Bredlow, Bauer, Margreitter, Muhl, Leibold, Petrak, Rhein, Misidjan, Goden, Ishak, Zrelak
Head To Head
- The two sides haven’t met in the Bundesliga since 2014.
- Nurnberg are 2-0-2 in last four v Monchengladbach (in Bundesliga).
Key Stats & Facts
- Thorgan Hazard is joint third in Bundesliga for combined goals and assists- 8G’s, 6A’s.
- Monchengladbach have won all six of their home games this season, conceding only three goals in the process- joint best record in the league.
- Nurnberg have not won an away game this season- two draws, four defeats.
- They have also conceded 24 goals in their six away games, including a 7-0 defeat (Dortmund), 6-0 defeat (RB Leipzig) and a 5-2 defeat (Schalke).
- Nurnberg’s top scorer in the league has two goals, with four players on this number.
- Monchengladbach 4/11
- Draw 4/1
- Nurnberg 13/2
With the likelihood of Monchengladbach fielding a weaker side being quite high, there is potential for Nurnberg to come away with something, especially having an extra day’s rest. But, their terrible away record and Monchengladbach’s imperial home record has convinced me not to go down that route. I do see Monchengladbach coming out with the win in a tight game, maybe a 1-0 or 2-0.
The home side have also scored 10 goals in the first half this season, but 23 in the second and I see that trend continuing on Tuesday, more goals in the second half seems like a good shout at evens.
