Carlo Ancelotti’s Napoli entertain Liverpool at the Stadio San Paolo this Wednesday and they will be hoping to bounce back from a disappointing draw in their Group C opener.
Following a frustrating goalless stalemate in Gameweek 1 against perceived weak-links Red Star Belgrade, this is a pivotal match for the Naples outfit, who face PSG away in their next European fixture. We can therefore expect the hosts to show plenty of attacking intent here, which should lead to a free-flowing, entertaining affair.
Liverpool’s potent front-line usually thrive in such circumstances, so goals can be expected when these sides meet in midweek. Ladbrokes have priced up ‘Both Teams To Score and Over 2.5 Goals’ at a healthy 10/11 and considering the context of the game, this appears a nice play at the price. Last term, this bet banked for backers in five of Napoli’s six group games and it has also landed in Liverpool’s previous five Champions League ties.
Napoli’s Alex Meret, Vlad Chiricheș, and Faouzi Ghoulam are all long-term absentees.
Liverpool have no major injury concerns. Daniel Sturridge may come into the starting line-up after his wonder-goal against Chelsea.
Potential Napoli Starting XI: Ospina, Rui, Koulibaly, Albiol, Hysaj, Allan, Zieliński, Hamšík, Callejón, Insigne, Mertens.
Potential Liverpool Starting XI: Alisson, Robertson, van Dijk, Gomez, Alexander-Arnold, Milner, Keita, Wijnaldum, Salah, Mané, Sturridge.
Head To Head
- The last meeting between the sides was a friendly in early August. Liverpool thrashed the Italians 5-0 at the Aviva Stadium.
- Eight years prior, the teams locked horns in the Europa League group stage. The Reds ran out 3-1 winners at Anfield, whilst a 0-0 draw was contested in Naples.
Key Stats & Facts
- Napoli have scored 21 goals in their last 10 competitive home fixtures, averaging a total of 2.1 per-game.
- Performance data rates both sides in the top five for each of shots and shots on target domestically.
- Napoli – 63/25
- Draw – 14/5
- Liverpool – 23/20
Both sides possess enough attacking talent to get on the scoresheet at least once, if not more here. The 10/11 on ‘Both Teams To Score and Over 2.5 Goals’ therefore appeals.
