This fixture between Reading and Derby County will be the first Championship game of the 2018/19 season. No pressure guys.
Despite reaching the Championship play-off final, before narrowly losing to Huddersfield in 2016, the Royals spent the majority of the 2017/18 season in the bottom half of the table and finished 20th that campaign. However, it appears that Reading haven’t been able to turn their misfortunes around, as they didn’t win a single pre-season game ahead of the Championship season.
While on the other hand, Derby County seem to be enjoying a lot of success with new manager Frank Lampard at the helm. During pre-season, the Rams have seen off Premier League opposition in the form of Wolves and Southampton, defeating the latter 3-0. Derby County will look to defeat the Royals in a convincing manner as they will be aiming to kick-start their promotion charge to the Premier League.
Callum Harriot of Reading will not feature due to an ongoing hamstring injury, whilst defender, Tyler Blackett, is currently suspended. Derby County, on the other hand, have a fully fit squad to choose from.
Potential Reading Starting XI: Mannone; Gunter, Yiadom, McShane, Iloir; Meyler, Kelly, Swift; Barrow, Aluko, Meite
Potential Derby County Starting XI: Carson; Wisdom, Keogh, Davies, Lowe; Bryson, Ledley, Mount; Wilson, Nugent, Lawrence
Head To Head
- Despite what recent times might suggest, Reading have actually won around 52% of their fixtures against Derby County and are generally considered the superior side when taking into account their previous meetings.
Key Stats & Facts
- Reading haven’t won a game at the Madejski since April 7th.
- Reading have only won two Championship games at the Madejski in 2018.
- Derby County have only won two Championship away games in 2018.
- Reading – 11/5
- Draw – 9/4
- Derby County – 5/4
Reading simply haven’t found their feet during pre-season and have even struggled against sides such as Eastleigh, who play their football in the National League. On the other hand, this Derby County side look rather exciting under Frank Lampard and they will certainly be looking to boost their morale by beating the Royals convincingly.
