Senegal will be looking to continue their success at the 30 June Stadium as they defeated Benin 1-0 in the previous round to progress to the AFCON semi-finals. In addition to this, Senegal have now recorded two back-to-back 1-0 victories over both Benin and Uganda. However, these two score lines do not accurately represent the attacking superiority they demonstrated within these games.
Speaking to the press, round of 16 goal scorer Idrissa Gueye said: “We managed to dominate, score and win this match. As soon as we scored, we went forward to attack even more, but the main thing for us is the qualification.”
Tunisia scraped through Group E by the skin of their teeth and had to rely on penalties in order to defeat Ghana and progress to the quarter-finals. Head coach Alain Giresse revealed that he was ‘satisfied’ with their performance against Madagascar but admitted he has his expectations set far higher for his team.
Tunisia put an end to Madagascar’s fairy-tale story within the AFCON, as the North African side were victorious by a comfortable 3-0 margin. Nevertheless, Tunisia’s quarter-final fixture was the first game in which the North African side demonstrated an element of poise and calmness to their play. Prior to this, Tunisia have somewhat struggled within the tournament.
Luckily for both squads, they are no current injuries or suspensions to the playing squads at this time.
Potential Senegal Starting XI: Gomis; Sabaly, Koulibaly, Kouyate, Gassama; Saivet, N’Diaye, Gueye; Balde, Niang, Mane
Potential Tunisia Starting XI: Hassen; Kechrida, Bronn, Meriah, Haddadi; Sassi, Skhiri, Chalali; Khazri, Khenissi, Msakni
Head To Head
In all competitions, Tunisia are historically the stronger side as they’ve defeated Senegal on nine occasions, drawing seven and losing four. However, their most recent match-up at the 2017 AFCON saw Senegal defeat Tunisia 2-0.
Key Stats & Facts
- Tunisia’s victory over Madagascar was the side’s first victory within 90 minutes during the AFCON 2019 tournament.
- All Senegal’s AFCON fixtures so far have resulted in one side scoring and the other failing to reply, therefore backing ‘both teams to score’ may not be a wise idea.
- Senegal – 21/20
- Draw 2/1
- Tunisia – 29/10
Prior to their surprise attacking performance against Madagascar, let’s say that finding the back of the net wasn’t exactly Tunisia’s forte. The North African side had scored just three times in a matter of four games prior to the semi-final and goal-scoring may be an issue for Tunisia when they take on Senegal. Furthermore, the Senegalese front three may appear dangerous on paper but have proved to be fairly wasteful in front of goal, with their performances against Uganda and Benin solidifying this.
