Swansea begin life back in the Championship with a tricky test at Bramall Lane against a well fancied Sheffield United side. Graham Potter was an interesting choice to come in as the new manager at the Liberty to replace Carlos Carvalhal, Potter worked wonders at Swedish outfit Ostersunds getting the small club competing in the Europa League and he deserves his chance in the Championship. Pre-season hasn't exactly gone to plan and it might take a while for Potter to get his methods across. The Swans are a team I want to be against in the opening few games.

Chris Wilder has created a distinctive playing style at Sheffield United which is attractive on the eye. 5-3-2/3-5-2 is Wilder's formation of choice and it's notable that centre halves Jack O'Connell and Chris Basham have license to enter the attack with one of the defensive midfielders dropping off to cover. Blades effectively have two players for each position and the recent in-comings of Kean Bryan and Ben Woodburn are eye catching, they'll slot right into this system. David Brooks departed to Bournemouth for big bucks, however the loan signing of Woodburn from Liverpool is a canny bit of business to replace him. Dean Henderson is a goalkeeper with promise, David McGoldrick has scored goals regularly at this level and John Egan is an excellent centre half. Transfer business at the South Yorkshire club has been excellent.

Here there seems to be a team who know how each other play, what to do and when to do it against a team who's style and method is still in its infancy.

Team News

Influential midfielder Paul Coutts is still recovering from a broken leg sustained in November and will remain sidelined for a while yet for Sheffield United.

Sam Clucas and Leroy Fer are both out for the visitors as is Wilfred Bony who is away on compassionate leave. Mike Van Der Hoorn is hoping to be fit after a groin injury, Martin Olsson will be checked for fitness levels after partaking in the World Cup for Sweden.

Potential Sheffield United Starting XI: Henderson, Stevens, O'Connell, Basham, Egan, Baldock, Fleck, Evans, Duffy, Clarke, Sharp

Potential Swansea Starting XI: Nordfelt, Roberts, Van Der Hoorn, Fernandez, Olsson, Fulton, Carroll, Celina, Asoro, McKay, McBurnie

Head To Head

Surprisingly these two teams have only met 7 times in the last 11 years with both sides winning 3 a piece and one ending all square. The last meeting ended in a 4-0 win for Swansea in 2011.

Stats & Facts

  • On opening day, Sheffield United have (W10, D3, L1) of their last 14 when on home soil.
  • Last season Sheffield United won all three of their home fixtures against relegated Premier League sides.
  • Last season Swansea has the second worst away record in the premier league, picking up a meagre 12 points.

The Verdict

Sheffield United will have home advantage and I think that could play a big factor in the end result. Bramall Lane will be bouncing and I'm expecting the Blades to come quick out the traps. 13/10 is an attractive quote and one that I'm more than happy to get involved with given Swansea's summer changes and poor away record.
