Since the arrival of Ralph Hassenhuttl, Southampton’s fortunes have turned for the better as the south coast side, who were previously tipped for relegation, currently sit 16th and are on the up. However, despite a victory against Leicester City and a memorable draw against Chelsea, the Saints were held to a draw against a Frank Lampard inspired Derby.

Derby have had their own spice of controversy this week as they were narrowly defeated by Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds United, despite the Argentine manager admitting to sending a ‘spy’ to the Derby County training ground. Prior to this fixture, Derby had lost just one fixture in their previous nine games.

Regarding the FA Cup itself, Southampton will be looking to continue from the successes of last season within the cup competition as the south coast side reached the semi-final before being eliminated by eventual winners, Chelsea. On the other hand, the last time Derby reached the semi-final of the knockout competition was in 1976. There most recent success within the tournament came in 1999 when they reached the quarter-final.

Team News

Southampton will be without two players for their FA Cup clash against Derby, as Hojbjerg will be unavailable for selection due to suspension while Maya Yoshida is currently away on international duty.

Frank Lampard will enter this fixture with a fully fit side at his disposal as he aims to defeat the Premier League side.

Potential Southampton Starting XI: McCarthy; Bednarek, Stephens, Vestergaard, Soares, Romeu, Ward-Prowse, Targett, Redmond, Armstrong, Long

Potential Derby County Starting XI: Carson, Wisdom, Keogh, Tomori, Lowe, Bryson, Evans, Mount, Holmes, Marriott, Lawrence

Head To Head

  • Prior to their previous FA Cup meeting, both Derby County and Southampton hadn’t faced each other since February 2012, where Derby lost 4-0. Furthermore, Derby haven’t defeated Southampton since 2007.

Key Stats & Facts

  • The last time Derby defeated Southampton was in 2007, where The Rams defeated The Saints 2-1 in the Championship Play-Off semi-final.
  • Southampton have won just a single game at home this season, which came in a 3-2 victory against Arsenal.

Betting Odds

  • Southampton – 13/20
  • Draw – 27/10
  • Derby – 9/2

The Verdict

Derby’s run within this year’s edition of the FA Cup will likely come to a premature end this Wednesday.

Considering the appointment of Hassenhuttl and Southampton’s recent form, they pose too much of a threat to Derby’s defence.

In addition to this, I believe that Derby will struggle to find the back of the net in this one. They put two past the Saints in the reverse fixture but I believe Hassenhuttl and his side will have what it takes to stroll into the next round with ease and little effort.
