Manchester City travel down south to take on Southampton in what will be both teams last game of the 2018 calendar year.
City have had a very tough December, and find themselves in third place behind both Liverpool and Tottenham. Back to back defeats over the festive period against Crystal Palace and Leicester has mounted the pressure against a team many thought would breeze the league yet again this season.
Southampton’s form has been very patchy this season, and since appointing their new manager, they have gone on to beat Arsenal and Huddersfield, but have lost to Cardiff and most recently West Ham. Staying in the Premier League is the goal now for The Saint’s and manager Ralph Hasenhütti will think that’s more than achievable, especially if he can make a few signings in January.
This is an absolute must win for City, whilst Southampton will be looking at this game as a free hit, no one is expecting them to win, but even a point would be a bonus. City will be praying for the return of Brazilian Fernadinho who has been injured over the Christmas period, as he has shown just how valuable he is to the squad, who have looked lost without him.
- Ryan Bertrand is the only doubt for Southampton.
- Fabian Delph is suspended for City after a straight red against Leicester, whilst Fernandinho, Jesus, and Kompany are all still doubts.
Southampton Potential Starting XI: McCarthy; Bednarek, Yoshida, Vestergaard; Soares, Romeu, Højbjerg, Targett; Armstrong, Redmond; Ings
Manchester City Potential Starting XI: Ederson; Walker, Otamendi, Laporte, ZInchenko; Gundogan; Silva, Silva, De Bruyne, Sterling; Aguero
Head To Head
- Manchester City have beaten Southampton in 8 of the last 10 fixtures.
Key Stats & Facts
- Southampton have conceded at least 2 goals in their last 3 home games.
- Manchester City have scored at least 2 goals in 8 of their last games against Southampton.
- Southampton 10/1
- Draw 9/2
- Manchester City 1/3
Manchester City must win this game and must win it in fashion. They need to start putting the pressure back on Liverpool as they tend to bottle it in the business end of the season, so City need to enter the New Year in good fashion. There should be plenty of goals here, and most if not all of them for Manchester City.
