Arsenal’s Europa League campaign continues away in Portugal on Thursday, in what is likely to be their biggest test of their recent run of games in all competitions.
Sporting Lisbon, as are Arsenal, are two wins from two to begin this group so this is likely to be the game that decides who tops this group and guarantee a more favourable match in the next round.
Sporting Lisbon are a step-up from the sides Arsenal have recently played in their 10-match winning run and the Portuguese outfit have won eight of their first 11 games in all competitions to start the season and have not lost a competitive home game in over a year.
Lisbon have won 21 of their last 23 home competitive fixtures and of those 21, they have conceded just 5 goals and have won to nil in 19 of those games. They have won their last three games in the Europa League at home and all three have been wins to nil.
The home record certainly speaks volumes and Arsenal will be severely tested. The away side have won 10 in a row in all competitions and have scored 30 goals in that process and travel to Portugal full of confidence. With Aubameyang set to start, you would expect Arsenal to continue their goal scoring form but their defensive performances this season would suggest the home side will also have plenty of opportunities.
Sporting are sweating on the fitness of key players, including Jeremy Mathieu, Bas Dost and Raphinha. Romain Salin and Bruno Caesar were on the bench at the weekend and could start here.
Unai Emery will look to rotate his squad here after their win over Leicester on Monday night. Petr Cech and Sokratis are close to full-fitness and could feature here, whilst Aaron Ramsey, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Matteo Guendouzi could start from the off.
Potential Sporting Lisbon Starting XI: Salin; Gaspar, Coates, Mathieu, Jefferson; Nani, Fernandes, Gudelj, Acuna, Mane; Montero
Potential Arsenal Starting XI: Leno; Bellerin, Holding, Sokratis, Lichsteiner; Elneny, Guendouzi; Smith-Rowe, Ramsey, Welbeck; Aubameyang
Head To Head
- This will be the first time these two sides have faced each other.
Stats & Facts
- Sporting Lisbon have won their last three Europa League matches.
- Arsenal have won both of their group matches so far.
- Arsenal are on a 10-match winning run.
- Sporting Lisbon – 29/10
- Draw – 66/25
- Arsenal – 11/10
Arsenal at just over EVENS definitely appeals here, especially given the form of Emery’s men so far this season. They are scoring at will and showing signs of the Arsenal of old but the changes like to be made here could slightly reduce their threat here. Lisbon have an exceptional home record and concede very few goals also, so the rotation used could even this one out to a close contest. Both teams should get on the score sheet in what should be an entertaining game.
