Sunderland kick off their League One campaign at home to Charlton, who many are tipping the Black Cats to bounce straight back to the Championship. Jack Ross is the new gaffer on Wearside after an impressive season with St Mirren in the Scottish Championship, gaining promotion comfortably. Ross is untested at this level but the Black Cats' fans are optimistic about the season ahead. Ross finally got his man in Charlie Wyke signing from Bradford City. The former Carlisle man has proven himself a good goalscorer at both Leagues One and Two and was an area of the pitch that did need strengthening.
However, the same kind of optimism cannot be found at the Valley. Charlton have been wrangled with financial issues this summer and there's still a question mark over the ownership of the club. Lee Bowyer has brought in marksman Lyle Taylor from AFC Wimbledon and he'll be pinning his hopes on him to fire for the Addicks. Youngster Karlan Ahearne-Grant had a very successful loan spell at Crawley last year and should feature more for his parent club this season given the fairly light numbers at the London club. Another player with a bright future is Joe Aribo. The rangy midfielder likes to get forward and cause problems for the opposition. It could be a difficult season for Charlton, especially with the loss of a physical threat in Josh Maggenis. Lee Bowyer has not yet been named permanent manager, given a prospective takeover and that cloud could linger over the club.
Both sides have a lot of injury problems. Charlton are probably worse off.
Charlton will be without Anfernee Dijksteel who has a bout of pneumonia. Lyle Taylor is doubtful and the likes of Billy Clarke, Tariq Fosu, Ben Reeves, Jake Forster-Caskey and Igor Vetokele are all out for The Addicks.
Sunderland are unlikely to start with new signing Wyke after he picked up a knock in Bradford City's friendly with Sheffield United. Dylan McGeouch and Tom Flanagan are also both doubtful for the Black Cats.
Potential Sunderland Starting XI: McLaughlin, Love, Baldwin, Loovens, Matthews, Honeyman, O'nien, Gooch, Maguire, Sinclair, Maja.
Potential Charlton Starting XI: Phillips, Solly, Bauer, Pearce, Page, Lapslie, Aribo, Marshall, Hackett-Fairchild, Ahearne-Grant, Ajose.
