The first leg of the League Cup Semi-Final takes place at Wembley on Tuesday night as Tottenham host Chelsea in what is sure to be a fiercely contested affair. Both sides come into this game after progressing through to the next stage of the FA Cup. Chelsea were 2-0 winners against Nottingham Forest whilst Spurs had their biggest ever away win against Tranmere Rovers winning 7-0.
Spurs are flying high in the league and they have a realistic chance of winning a trophy under Marucio Pochettino for the first time. At this stage of the competition the with so much at stake we are most likely going to the see the regular starters take the field on both sides.
The previous meeting between these two sides in the League saw Spurs run out 3-1 winners. That game saw Chelsea struggle to gain any momentum in possession with playmaker Jorginho smothered by Tottenham’s high pressing approach. That game also saw Tottenham’s front 3, Kane, Alli and Son, get on the score sheet. Tottenham have been prolific in front of goal this season their 7-0 win at the weekend against Tranmere was the third time they have scored at least 5 goals in their last 5 matches. Chelsea meanwhile have struggled in comparison. The Blues have struggled for goals recently with their front men failing to deliver and they come into this game having not scored more than two goals in any of their last 11 games in all competitions.
In the last 6 meetings between these two sides over 2.5 goals have been scored on 5 occasions and you can back that to happen again at 17/20 (MarathonBet). Another angle is the over 2.5 goals and result market. This bet has landed for Spurs in their last two meetings with Chelsea and I think it could happen again this time around. Boyle Sports are 11/5 for over 2.5 goals and a Tottenham win on Tuesday night and I like that angle with Spurs having good recent form against their neighbours.
How Chelsea approach this game will be interesting to see. So often they have been able to grind out clean sheets in big games in the past but of late they have struggled for that defensive solidity. They only have 1 clean sheet in their last 6 away from home and the odds of them not to keep a clean sheet on Tuesday are 2/9 (Blacktype). They have managed to score a goal in all but one away game this season with their only blank coming against West Ham in September Both teams to score in this one is 7/10 (Bet365). Both teams have scored in 5 of the last 6 meetings and these odds give an implied probability of 58%.
I fancy Chelsea to be able to cause Spurs some issues on the counter attack and with star man Eden Hazard in good form of late, with 4 goals in his last 7 games, I think the Blues can find the back of the net again. Hazard to score at any time in this match is 23/10 (888Sport) Hazard has 5 goals in 13 appearances against Tottenham in his career which is a goal every 2.6 games against them. Currently he is on a 3 game streak without a goal against them and I think Tuesday night could see that streak end.
Jan Vertonghen and Mousa Dembele are targeting a return to action in time for Tuesday’s match.
Chelsea will be without Ruben Loftus-Cheek after the young midfielder was forced off with a knock last time out.
Potential Tottenham Starting XI: Lloris, Trippier, Sanchez, Alderweireld, Rose, Eriksen, Sissoko, Alli, Kane, Son
Potential Chelsea Starting XI: Kepa, Azpilicueta, Rudiger, Luiz, Alonso, Kante, Jorginho, Barkley, Willian, Morata, Hazard
Head To Head
- Chelsea have won 68 of the 162 meetings between the two sides.
- Spurs won the last meeting 3-1 back in November.
Key Stats & Facts
- Five of the last six clashes have gone over 2.5 goals.
- Both teams have scored in five of the last six meetings.
- Tottenham 1/1
- Draw 11/4
- Chelsea 13/5
This game will be high intensity and should give us some great football.
Spurs will be desperate to make home advantage count and I think they’ll look to take the game to the visitors. I fancy the home side to win this one with over 2.5 goals scored in the match.
Chelsea are also capable of scoring in this one and although they’re short odds I think 7/10 for both teams to score is a bet that has a high chance of coming in, particularly with it happening in 5 of the last 6 meetings between these two.
