Manchester United travel to the east coast of Spain knowing they’re already guaranteed to be in the knockout stages of this competition.
Jose Mourinho is likely to make wholesale changes for this encounter with a big game against Liverpool coming up at the weekend. They can still top the group though should Juventus lose in Switzerland against Young Boys and the Red Devils win here.
With no fear of dropping out the top two of the group and a need to win in order to have any chance of topping the group then an attacking game should be the order of the day. On the road goals have been a feature of United’s games this season, their last 8 away games have seen over 2.5 goals land, as have their two games away in the continent.
The fact we can get an even-money quote on their been 3 or more goals at the Mestalla therefore makes appeal.
Valencia can only finish 3rd and Marcelino May field an experimental side. One constant that Los Che have had in the last few years is a strong roster of young talent. The likes of Santi Mina, Jose Gaya and Carlos Soler to name three, even 21 year old Toni Lato May get a start on Wednesday night.
They’re players who like to express themselves the playing style and intensive fitness based training regime implemented by Marcelino could hamper their creative potential. With nothing on the line here I’d hope they can play with more freedom and show what they’re all about.
Valencia will be without the suspended Jose Gaya. Centre halves Gabriel Paulista and Jeison Murrilo are doubts.
Manchester United will be without Victor Lindelof and Alexis Sanchez for this trip. Matteo Darmian and Eric Bailly are slight doubts but may have to play. Anthony Martial May be rested for the weekend.
Potential Valencia Starting XI: Neto, Piccini, Garay, Diakhaby, Lato, Soler, Parejo, Kondogbia, Guedes, Batshauyi, Mina.
Potential Man Utd Starting XI: Romero, Valencia, Bailly, Rojo, Darmian, Felliani, Fred, Pogba, Mata, Rashford, Lukaku.
Key Stats & Facts
- Manchester United are undefeated in their last 9 games against Valencia.
- Over 2.5 goals has landed in 16 of their 21 fixtures in all comps this season for Manchester United.
- Valencia – 13/8
- Draw – 12/5
- Manchester United – 9/5
There’s not much between the teams in the match prices here. Many will be tempted by United as outsiders in this one as they have more incentive to win and have won their two away games in the champions league so far. However it’s difficult to trust their defence this season so I’m happy to go into the goal markets.
As mentioned above, over 2.5 is an even-money quote with William Hill and I’m happy to get involved with that. It’s got a track record in United games on the road this season and Valencia should play with a greater degree of freedom, they certainly have attacking threats.
