Watford v Chelsea Betting Preview, Odds & Tips

- Venue: Vicarage Road

Watford come into this game on the back of fantastic 2-0 away win at West Ham, who were on a 4-win streak previous to the game. Chelsea come into the game in the opposite situation having suffered a 1-0 defeat to Leicester at home last time out, despite dominating for large periods of the game.
Watford sit only 10 points behind Chelsea in 7th place after a dream start to the season for them under Spaniard Javi Garcia. They tend to go on spells of good form, then it dips for a few games. They’re currently two wins on the bounce after a 3-2 victory over Cardiff in their last home game. They will be eager to once again make a statement by taking points off one of the league’s top teams.
Chelsea enjoyed a dream start under Maurizio Sarri after keeping the pace with leaders Liverpool and Man City, after a tough season under Conte last year. Generally they have been a very good outfit in the league, managing to beat Manchester City 2-0 at home being the highlight of that. Two of the losses Chelsea have taken this season have come against much inferior teams, in Leicester and Wolves.
As the games start to come thick and fast during the festive season it becomes make or break for a lot of teams. Most teams will have 4 games between 22nd and the 2nd. That’s a possible 12 points across an 11-day period and if Chelsea fail to pick up at least another 6 it could see them slip outside the top 4, which a few weeks ago most would have said they had it already wrapped up. The need for points will be a lot lower for Watford as they are already exceeding expectations, however Garcia’s men will be up for the fight no doubt about it.
Will Hughes and Andre Gray will both still be missing for Watford due to injury, and it is also unlikely that either Daryl Janmaat and Sebastian Prodl will be fit enough for contention.
Chelsea will be missing Danish centre back Christensen aswell as Victor moses, who are both still out with injuries. Morata has a slight chance of a return but would be unlikely to see him play much more than a late sub role if at all.
Potential Watford Starting XI: Foster, Kiko, Kabasele, Cathcart, Holebas, Capoue, Doucoure, Pereyra, Sema, Deeney, Deulofeu.
Potential Chelsea Starting XI: Kepa, Azpilicueta, Rudiger, Luiz, Alonso, Kante, Jorginho, Barkley, Hazard, Pedro, Giroud.
Head To Head
- Watford stunned Chelsea with a 4-1 victory last time the teams met at Vicarage Road, with 3 late goals.
- Despite Watford winning the last game between the pair, you have to go back to 1999 to find the time before this that they recorded a victory against the Blue’s.
- Chelsea have won 10 of the last 15 meetings, with 3 draws and 2 losses.
Key Stats & Facts
- BTTS has happened in 4 of the last 5 meetings between the two, and of this 3 of the games have also had 5 or more goals.
- Watford have only kept 2 clean sheets so far at home this season, against Brighton and Huddersfield.
- Chelsea have only failed to score in one away game this season against West Ham.
- Watford 17/4
- Draw 14/5
- Chelsea 3/4
As well as the teams having a lot of goals in their H2H games, Watford have landed over 2.5 goals in their last 8 home games.
Watford are proving to be a tough outfit this season and with Chelsea recently struggling I think there is value to be found with the home side.
Jorginho has also been carded in 3 of his last 6 games for Chelsea, and he will face a tough task marking Watford’s tricky players in Pereyra and Deulofeu.
