Saturday night sees unbeaten Watford take on Manchester United. Watford go into the game on the back of a great 2-1 win against Spurs. The Hornets have won all 4 of their games in the league this season and they have been the surprise package of the season so far.

United go into this game on the back of a good win away from home in their last game against Burnley. That win did come at a cost though with Striker Marcus Rashford getting sent off. The international break hasn’t been too kind to United either with left-back Luke Shaw picking up a bad head injury during his time with England. He could make a comeback at Vicarage Road if the medical staff are convinced the full-back has made a full recovery. The Red Devils will also be without defender Phil Jones who is still suffering with an injury.

With Watford on a high and Manchester United being a bit Jekyll and Hyde this season, we could see the Hornets go on to grab another big victory.  The football that Watford have played so far this season has caused lots of issues for opposition sides. They are combative in midfield and last time out against Spurs they didn’t give much up in that area. Striker Troy Deeney has been a handful up front and with the added quality of attacking midfielder Roberto Pereyra, who has scored 3 goals so far this season, they have different dimensions to their attack. The former Juventus man is 12/1 to score first on Saturday.

In years gone by this game would have been a nailed on win for Manchester United, however this season’s game will be hard to call with the improvements that Watford have made under manager Javi Gracia.  Watford are best priced 7/2 to win on Saturday evening with United 10/11. The international break will have also given Watford a chance to rest with some of their players not involved in the international matches. The freshness of Watford could see them get over the line in this one and 7/2 is a good price for an in form team at home.

It’s always dangerous to go against Manchester United due to the quality that they have in their side. Their away record isn’t great with only 1 win in their last 4 away matches, however they still possess the quality to cause issues for Watford’s Defence. Striker, Romalu Lukaku, bagged a brace last time out and he is 9/2 (Betvictor) to score first on Saturday.

I touched on Watford being combative in their approach to the game and across the first 4 games in the league this season they have picked up 10 yellow cards. Midfielder Etiene Capoue has picked up 3 yellow cards already this season and he is 5/2 to be carded again this Saturday in a game that could turn into a battle particularly in midfield.

Team News

United will be without Marcus Rashford who is suspended. Luke shaw is a doubt after picking up a head injury whilst on duty with England.

Watford will be without Tom Cleverly and Younes Kaboul and they have doubts over midfielder Gerard Deulofeu.

Potential Watford Starting XI: Foster, Janmaat, Cathcart, Kabasele, Holebas, Hughes, Doucoure, Capoue, Pereyra, Gray, Deeney

Potential Manchester United Starting XI: De Gea, Valencia, Smalling, Lindelof, Young, Pogba, Matic, Fellaini, Sanchez, Lukaku, Lingard

Head To Head

The last draw between these two sides took place in 1986 when it finished 1-1

United have 5 wins in their last 6 matches against Watford.

Key Stats & Facts

  • Watford have only beaten United 5 times in their history (W5, D5, L19).

Betting Odds

  • Watford 7/2
  • Draw 13/5
  • Manchester United 10/11

The Verdict

Watford have a great chance to pick up a fifth win on the bounce on Saturday night and I’d have more confidence in backing them to get the win rather than a Manchester United side who have struggled for consistency. This could be a real battle and we could see a few cards being dished out in what should be a very hard fought game.
