West Brom are once again in front of the TV cameras on Friday night, but this is a fixture that deserves to be shown on a national stage.

It’s a West-Midlands clash that pits the highest scoring side in the division against one that’s scored 16 in their last 5 games. I previewed West Brom’s fixture on Monday against Brentford, mentioning their high scoring rate but also their inability to keep clean sheets. The Baggies conceded once again and I’m sure an in form Villa can come here and take advantage of that. You get the feeling that the hosts will have to notch a few goals here if they’re to end victorious, you can’t rule it out though given their scoring prowess this term.

Dean Smith is really starting to insert his methodology on his home town club. The Villa faithful are buying in to his attacking style and it makes a refreshing change to the previous regime. They have the most in form striker in the league with Tammy Abraham, he’s bagged in each of his last 4 games including 4 in that thrilling 5-5 draw with Nottingham Forest. He should get some chances here, especially given the way Smith’s sides create goalscoring chances at will.

West Brom come in to this as favourites and given they have home advantage it’s probably fair, however quotes of 21/10 on the resurgent Villa look a shade too big and will tempt the punters in no doubt.

Team News

Dwight Gayle could come in for Hal Robson-Kanu for the hosts. Kyle Bartley remains unavailable, whilst Bakary Sako is a doubt.

Villa are without Albert Adomah, Birkir Bjarnason and Henri Lansbury. Young striker Keinan Davis is also a doubt.

Potential West Brom Starting XI: Johnstone, Adarabioyo, Hegazi, Dawson, Gibbs, Phillips, Livermore, Morrison, Barnes, Rodriguez, Gayle.

Potential Aston Villa Starting XI: Nyland, Hutton, Chester, Tuanzebe, Taylor, Bolasie, Hourihane, McGinn, El-Ghazi, Grealish, Abraham.

The Verdict

My first port of call here is to back Aston Villa goals. Coral go 5/4 on the away side scoring 2 or more here and that appeals given they’ve done so in their last 5. The strength of their opposition is strong but they’ve gone to Pride Park and the Riverside and scored 3 in both; given WBA’s poor defensive record there’s no reason the can’t repeat the feat here.

We managed to nail 3 out of 4 in our 128/1 Same Game Multi in the Villa vs Birmingham game so I’m happy to go in again on a similar big price bet on Friday night. There is a caveat here over team news so I’d recommended getting on once the line-ups are announced.

We’re going to for Jay Rodriguez and Tammy Abraham to score, Kieran Gibbs and Alan Hutton to be booked. It’s currently best price with Bet365’s BetBuilder at 119/1 with Betfair, again utilising their ‘Same Game Multi’ feature.

It’s the sides two top scorers respectively, for high scoring teams who create plenty of chances.

Alan Hutton was booked in the Second City derby the other week and is likely to be up against Harvey Barnes and Kieran Gibbs. We successfully backed Brentford right back Henrik Dalsgaard to be carded against WBA and he obliged fouling Barnes, Hutton could have his hands full here.

Gibbs will have to watch out defensively as well with one of Anwar El-Ghazi or Yannick Bolasie running at him. Both are quick and tricky players, the majority of Villa’s attacking against Middlesborough came down that side so it may be something they target again.

Recommended Bets

  • Aston Villa To Score 2 or more goals – 5/4 (Coral)
  • Rodriguez and Abraham to score, Hutton and Gibbs to be carded – 119/1 (Betfair)
