Arsenal look to continue their fine Europa League form on Thursday night as they welcome Italian big guns Napoli to the Emirates for the quarter final first leg.
Unai Emery’s men made hard work of their last 16 tie with Rennes but eventually they came through with a convincing home win. They perform much better at their North London base, they tend to dominate games more often than on the road and I’d expect them to have plenty of the ball in this one.
Emery is a stalwart of this competition, winning it a couple of times with former club Sevilla. With question marks surrounding whether the Gunners will finish in the top 4 I’d expect them to have a strong focus on winning this competition and thus guaranteeing them Champions League football next season.
It’s their first seriously elite club they’ll be facing though and you could argue they’ve been unlucky in drawing Napoli, but if they can go to Naples with a lead to hold on to it will boost their chances of making the semi final.
Carlo Ancelotti has overseen a decent season with his side sitting comfortably in 2nd place in the Serie A standings, they’re almost guaranteed champions league football next term therefore this should be their main focus of silverware too.
They still boast a dangerous attacking force with the likes of Dries Mertens, Arkadiusz Milik, Lorenzo Insigne and Jose Callejon. It’s hard to see them not troubling a far from convincing Arsenal backline, they’ve scored in each of their last 10 games. However, the Partenopei, like Arsenal, cannot he trusted at the back. They’ve conceded in each of their last 6 games.
Rob Holding, Danny Welbeck and Hector Bellerin remain absent for the hosts. Granit Xhaka and Laurent Koscielny are rated as 50/50.
Napoli are without Raul Albiol and Amadou Diawara, ex Arsenal goalkeeper David Ospina is doubtful too.
Potential Arsenal Starting XI: Cech, Maitland-Niles, Mustafi, Sokratis, Koscielny, Kolasinac, Xhaka, Torreira, Ramsey, Iwobi, Aubameyang.
Potential Napoli Starting XI: Meret, Malcuit, Koulibaly, Maksimovic, Rui, Allan, Ruiz, Zielinski, Insigne, Callejon, Mertens.
Key Stats & Facts
- There has been over 2.5 goals in Arsenal’s last 3 Europa League games.
- BTTS has landed in the last 6 Napoli fixtures in all competitions.
- Arsenal have won 20 of their 26 home games this season in all competitions.
- Arsenal – 29/20
- Draw – 5/2
- Napoli – 2/1
All things considered I think Arsenal are a good price here. Whilst they fail to fully convince, their strong record at the Emirates is there for all to see. Especially with them being at home they will be eager to get a win here and with Emery’s terrific record in this tournament I’m happy to back the hosts.
Instead of taking the 29/20 I’m willing to boost that to 10/3 by chucking in BTTS along side a home win. Napoli will be a big threat with their pace on the break and I’d expect them to notch here however with it being over 2 legs they wouldn’t be distraught with a 2-1 or 3-2 loss, especially with the away goals rule applying.
