The Quarter Final stage of this years League Cup gives us a tasty treat in the form of a North London Derby. Arsenal host Spurs in what is sure to be a fiercely contested match judging on their last meeting in the league.
For the first time in a long time Arsenal have the comfort of not being judged too harshly for not winning trophies, largely due to them beginning a new chapter under Unai Emery who took over as manager in the summer. Tottenham however are in a period where they’re going to start being judged on what they win. There’s no doubt that Spurs have been transformed under Pochettino and they are brilliant football team, but they will always be judged, rightly or wrongly, on the number of trophies that they win. So, it stands to reason then that this cup tie is big for Spurs.
In the last 4 meetings between these two home advantage has been key. There hasn’t been an away win in this fixture since 2015 when Arsenal won 2-1 at White Hart Lane with Mathieu Flamini scoring a double. Spurs are 7/4 to win on Wednesday with Arsenal priced at 8/5 to get the win.
One angle I like is for both teams to find the back of the net which is 1/2 (Bet365). That bet landed in the last game that these two played and I think it’ll will again on Wednesday. The two sides are prolific in front of goal and they can struggle at the back. Arsenal have conceded 23 goals in the league and they were able to put 4 goals past a good defensive unit in Spurs. Both teams to score in this fixture has landed 7 times out of the last 10 meetings.
As I mentioned before, both of these sides will most likely put strong teams out. I would expect Arsenal to start with Aubameyang up front after his impressive display against Tottenham in the last meeting. Aubameyang scored 2 and assisted another in the 4-2 League win and he is 9/2 (Royal Panda) to score first on Wednesday. Aubameyang has 12 goals in 21 appearances in all competitions this season which I believe works out as a goal every 1.75 games. He is 7/5 (Betway) to score at any time during the match which I think is good value considering his exploits last time out against this Spurs backline.
Hector Bellerin has added to Emery’s injury concerns and will be out for “weeks” with a calf injury.
The full-back joins Konstantinos Mavropanos (groin), Rob Hoding (knee), Danny Welbeck (ankle) and Emile Smith Towe (groin) on the sidelines, although Shkodran Mustafi (thigh) and Sead Kolasinac (thigh) are battling back to try and be fit in time.
Tottenham are no better off with Eric Dier (appendx surgery), Mousa Dembele (foot), Victor Wanyama (knee), Jan Vertonghen (thigh) and Vincent Janssen (ankle) out of action.
Potential Arsenal Starting XI: Cech, Lichsteiner, Sokratis, Koscielny, Maitland-Niles, Xhaka, Guendouzi, Ramsey, Ozil, Mkhitaryan, Aubameyang
Potential Tottenham Starting XI: Vorm, Walker-Peters, Alderweireld, Foyth, Davies, Skipp, Winks, Son, Alli, Lucas, Kane
Head To Head
- Arsenal and Spurs have met 183 times in official competitions, with Arsenal winning 77 games, Spurs 57, and the sides sharing 49 draws.
- The last time the two sides met, Arsenal edged Spurs 4-2 in the league back on 2 December.
Key Stats & Facts
- 3 of the last 5 meetings at the Emirates have finish 1-1.
- Arsenal 6/4
- Draw 13/5
- Tottenham 13/8
This should be a very entertaining game to watch and both sides will know the importance of the tie. I think we could see a similar game to the one that we saw a couple of weeks ago with goals being scored by both sides.
Arsenal have conceded over 20 goals in the league so far and they looked shaky at best when conceding 3 goals to a poor Southampton side.
The Gunners do have a prolific striker in Aubameyang who finds the net every 1.75 games so far this season and odds of 7/5 suggest that he has 54% chance of doing so again on Wednesday.
