The Championship Playoffs are finally here! 5 games of pure entertainment and this year we have 4 former Premier League teams battling it out for a place back among the big boys.
Lunch time gives us an almighty clash between to local rivals, Aston Villa and West Brom. This game should kick us off to a great start to the Playoffs. West Brom are looking to get back to the Premier League at the first attempt and they have managed to come through a tough period to remain in the Playoff positions for most of the season. Villa on the other hand started the season off poorly but they really picked up after Dean Smith was appointed. They won 10 in a row and went on a 12 game unbeaten run to help fire themselves into the Playoffs.
This clash is usually a big game regardless of the prize at the end of it but with the Premier League status at the end of these playoffs and all of the money that goes with it then I think it’s fair to say this game is bigger than Peter Crouch on stilts. We should be in for a treat as these two sides play good football and have a lot of talent all over the pitch.
- Villa have question marks over Striker, Tammy Abraham and Defender, James Chester.
- West Brom have doubts over Gareth Barry and Jake Livermore.
Potential Aston Villa Starting XI: Steer, Elmohamady, Tuanzebe, Mings, Taylor, Grealish, Hourihane, McGinn, Green, Kodjia, El-Ghazi.
Potential West Brom Starting XI: Johnstone, Dawson, Bartley, Hegazi, Holgate, Harper, Brunt, Johansen, Gibbs, Rodrigues, Gayle
Head To Head
- West Brom are unbeaten against Aston Villa this season and haven’t lost to them since 2015.
Key Stats & Facts
- Villa have scored 82 goals this season with 60% of those coming at home.
- West Brom have scored 87 goals with only 39% of those goals coming on the road.
- West Brom are without a win in 4 games away from home.
- Aston Villa 9/10
- Draw 5/2
- West Brom 18/5
This is a huge tie for both teams, Aston Villa are in good form to make their home advantage count and they have a rested squad after making changes in their last match. West Brom on the other hand will be a bit concerned about their away form coming into the match having not won on the road since 16th March.
WBA are going to be right up against it at Villa park and having watched their last outing against Derby I would be worried about their chances of a positive result. Derby really put WBA under the cosh on Sunday and the Baggies struggled to retain the ball and managed only 2 shots on goal.
Villa will look to get at the Baggies early and I think they will get some joy. Stirker, Tammy Abraham has bagged 25 goals in the league this season and should he start the game I think he’ll be a good shout to find the back of the net again. Abraham is 7/2 (Betvictor) to score first on Saturday and I think that’s a great price for a Striker who has goal every 1.48 games in the league this season.
Everything about this game says to me there will be goals and Villa will know that they’ll need a positive result to take to the Hawthorns where WBA are very strong. Over 2.5 goals and Aston Villa to win is 21/10 (Coral) and I think this is a good play. Villa have the firepower to get goals at home and WBA will always hold a chance of scoring themselves with the likes of Gayle and Rodriguez in attack.
