If this game can live up to anything similar to the reverse fixture it will be an unmissable match. When the pair met in December the game finished 3-3 with 2 red cards and a 96th minute equaliser, in true Italian style.
Both sides have hit some rough form at the pivotal stage in the season. They only have 1 win between the pair in the last 5 games, and that was Sassuolo at home to already relegated Chievo. Not that the form will be a problem for either side as they both sit mid table and couldn’t challenge for anything or get caught into a survival battle, however it is not the ideal note to end a season on.
The signing of Luis Muriel in summer from Sevilla on loan was a light in the tunnel for Fiorentina, and the striker bagged a huge 8 goals in his first 10 games, however has only managed 1 in his last 9. Sassuolo have had a similar problem with scoring goals, with no single player managing to score more than 7 so far in 33 games, which works out at an average of 1 goal every 4.7 matches which simply isn’t good enough for a team that want to be up challenging the European spots.
Lafont has been eye catching this season for Fiorentina between the sticks and has attracted a lot of interest from European teams. They signed him from Toulouse in the summer and the 20 year old will be sure to attract a hefty price tag in summer should the Italians decide to cash in on him so quickly. Unfortunately though his performance was not enough to prevent Atlanta overcoming an early goal to lose in the semi-final of the Copa Italia on Thursday.
Fiorentina’s only injury is young Croatian Marko Pjaca who has been out for about 7 weeks now.
Sassuolo also have just the one injury to Magnani who also missed out in the last game. Manuel Locatelli is also suspended after picking up too many yellow cards.
Potential Fiorentina Starting XI: Lafont, Biraghi, Ceccherini, Pezzella, Milenkovic, Dabo, Vertout, Benassi, Simeone, Muriel, Chiesa
Potential Sassuolo Starting XI: Consigli, Ferrari, Lirola, Demiral, Rogerio, Magnanelli, Duncan, Babacar, Sensi, Boga, Berardi
Head To Head
- The reverse fixture served up a classic with a 3-3 draw.
- The last 5 games have played out 2 draws, 2 wins for Fiorentina and a single win for Sassuolo.
- Sassuolo haven’t beat Fiorentina at home for almost 5 seasons.
Key Stats & Facts
- The last 5 meetings between the pair when Fiorentina were the home side have issued 17 goals, and also featured a 0-0 in that.
- Fiorentina have 6 draws in their last 7 home league matches.
- Sassuolo have 3 draws in their last 3 matches.
- Fiorentina 3/4
- Draw 5/2
- Sassuolo 17/4
The draw looks a viable play here once again, and the stats back it up tremendously. Fiorentina have drawn 6 of their last 7 home games, and to match this Sassuolo have drawn their last 3 matches in a row, and with the form of both sides I cant see much changing. They have however both shown their lack of ability to keep a clean sheet, and the sides haven’t had a stalemate draw for 5 years. Therefore to add BTTS into the draw we get a great price at 4/1.
Cards also look a good play here. The referee gave out 8 cards in the last game he officiated, which was a Seria B clash. He has also given out 22 cards in his last 4 games, averaging 5.5 cards per match. The last meeting between the two was also extremely card heavy with 4 yellow cards each and a red. We can get over 1 card each (meaning both sides need 2 cards each at least) at 7/4 which looks an unbelievable price, given they got 5 each in the last meeting.
