Glorious Goodwood Tips Today
The Qatar Goodwood Festival showcases some brilliant flat racing, boasting three Group 1 races. We keep a close eye on the flat race season to compile our Glorious Goodwood tips and give you a rundown of the standout betting tips for each day.
Glorious Goodwood Day 1 Tips – Goodwood Cup Day
The highlight of the first day of Glorious Goodwood is the Group 1 Goodwood Cup. This is part of the Stayers Triple Crown, with the Ascot Gold Cup and the Doncaster Cup. It is a major test of stamina. We will bring you our thoughts on this race and others from day one when the odds are released.
Glorious Goodwood Day 2 Tips – Sussex Stakes Day
Day two’s feature race is the Sussex Stakes, a Group 1 race for horses aged three-years-old or over. We think that Field of Gold is a good bet to win. Trained by John and Thady Gosden, who have enjoyed previous successes, he has started the season magnificently. However, we also recommend that you look at last year’s winner Notable Speech. A Charlie Appleby trained horse, and likely to be ridden by William Buick again, he is great value for an each-way bet at 5/1.
Glorious Goodwood Day 3 Tips – Ladies’ Day
The feature race of Ladies Day is the Nassau Stakes, a Group 1 race for fillies and mares over three-years-old. We’ll bring you our tips on this and the other races from day three when the odds are released.
Glorious Goodwood Day 4 Tips – King George Day
Day four at Goodwood sees the highly anticipated Group 2 race, the King George Stakes, as the day’s feature event. We will bring you our tips for that race and news on any other horses that catch our eye once the odds are available.
Glorious Goodwood Day 5 Tips – Stewards’ Cup Day
The feature race of the final day is the 6-furlong handicap race the Stewards Cup. Our tips for this and the other races will be available after the odds are released.
How We Select Our Glorious Goodwood Betting Tips
When it comes to tips for Glorious Goodwood betting, we undertake plenty of research over the flat season and ensure that our selections are data driven. We have detailed several key factors that we use when studying the form to help you make informed decisions when making your picks.
Age needs to be considered in horse racing. For instance, in the Goodwood Cup on day one, the race is for stayers, which means that three-year-olds might lack stamina compared to older horses in the two miles long contest. 10 of the last 12 winners were aged between four and six. However, in the Nassau Cup, for fillies and mares on Ladies Day, the last 12 editions have seen eight three-year-olds win over the shorter distance of one mile and two furlongs.
Glorious Goodwood is a top-quality festival, which includes three Group 1 races. Top-level experience can come into play in these races. In those three races, looking at the previous 12 editions, 94% of the winners had previously won a Group 1-3 race and in the Sussex Stakes 75% of those had a Group 1 victory. The King George Stakes may be a Group 2 race but nine from the last 12 winners were rated at 111 or higher and 10 winners from the last 12 had previously won a Group 1 – 3 race.
The races at Glorious Goodwood vary in distance. There is a true endurance test over two miles in the Goodwood Cup, while the King George Stakes is a blast over five furlongs (1005m). Look at the distance of each race, look how horses have performed over that distance and decide whether they have the legs to get up with the pace in a shorter race or stay the distance in a longer one.
Look at how a horse has been performing recently. Wins and consistent places must be noted. Remember though that a horse who has been racing well since the start of the season might not hold on to peak form. Look for a horse who has started steadily and is hitting form in the build up to the race. With the feature races, it is more likely trainers will be targeting them rather than using them as preparation for another event. For feature races, look at horses who have not raced often but have been brought out for the big events and produced a good performance.
Weather, especially rain, can affect the going on the course. Horses who can adapt to the different going on a fast course and a heavy one are more likely to run to expectations whatever Britain’s temperamental climate has to throw at them. Likewise, some horses must go off quickly and hang on to perform well, while others need to stay off the pace and come through. Look for horses who can adjust to different scenarios and win in different ways.
Weather conditions can be a major factor in horse racing. Some horses perform well in higher temperatures but struggle to get going if the weather is cooler. Others seem comfortable when the weather is cold and can still get up to the front quickly but seem to have their strength sapped in the heat. Rain can make the course either slippery or heavy, and some horses adapt better than others when this happens.
Glorious Goodwood Jockey & Trainer Stats
Studying trainer and jockey stats, as well as the form of the horses, is incredibly important when betting on horse racing. In addition to looking at trainers and jockeys individually, you need to keep an eye on successful trainer/jockey partnerships.
There are nuances that go into the complex business of preparing racehorses for competition and getting them to peak for the target races. Trainers need to develop the right training schedule, the optimum number of races, nutrition, facilities and recovery. Jockeys are a vital part of this, and the most successful trainers will work with trusted jockeys who are able to the bring the best out of their horses.
To help you with your research, check out our list of the top performing trainers and jockeys from the UK flat racing season so far.

Glorious Goodwood Racecourse Tips
Goodwood Racecourse is located above Chichester on the South Downs. The course is very distinct, therefore can favour those with experience of it, meaning that many horses have retained their titles at Glorious Goodwood.
Goodwood is a righthanded course with two bends. All races up to a mile and a quarter use the lower bend, and those more than eleven furlongs use the top bend. There is a five-furlong run-in from the top bend and the turns and downhill sections make Goodwood a fast track, especially in the shorter-distance races.
The five-furlong course is one of the fastest in the UK, meaning horses with natural speed often have an advantage. Even in longer races, horses must have some basic speed to keep up with the pace due to the sharp nature of the course.
Goodwood can be a difficult course to negotiate, therefore skilful jockeys and adaptable horses are the ones who usually prevail.

Most Popular Glorious Goodwood Betting Markets
Goodwood Racecourse plays host to one of the most prestigious flat racing festivals of the UK season. There is a huge amount of interest and a great number of betting opportunities. The festival may be covered with many markets, but we have highlighted the most popular.
A winner bet is simply a bet on who you think will win the race. Remember that you will only get your money if your horse comes in first, regardless of how well it performs. No win, no pay out for this type of bet.
An Each-way bet has two parts. The first part of the bet is a wager on your pick to win and the second part of the bet is a place bet on your horse to finish in the places. This would normally mean ¼ of the odds for a horse to finish in the top three, depending on how many are in the field. For the feature races at Glorious Goodwood, there may well be extra places on offer. Furthermore, bookmakers will often run promotions offering extra places for each-way bets at big festivals so, look out for this when placing your bets. If your research tells you that a horse is likely to run well but they are up against other strong contenders, then an each-way bet might be the best option.
Forecast bets are where you select two horses to come 1st and 2nd, in this precise order. The amount that the forecast pays is announced after the race. A reverse forecast, where you predict the first two horses but, in any order, will have shorter odds. Tricast bets work in the same way as forecasts. The difference is that you must place three horses rather than two. Obviously, this is more difficult to predict, so you will get longer odds. A combination tricast allows you to win if your horses finish in the first three, in any order, but your bet must be multiplied by six.
A placepot is where you to pick a horse that will place in several races, usually six, in a nominated meeting.
A double is where you pick horses in two different races and bet on them to win. If both horses win, your bet is successful. On the other hand, if one or both lose, your wager loses.
This is where you bet on a few horses to win across different races. With long odds or many selections, you can potentially receive huge winnings. This is not easy to pull off. Some bookmakers offer acca boosts or insurance, where a free bet is awarded if one selection brings down your entire acca bet.
