Asteras Tripolis will welcome Hibs to Tripoli on Thursday as both teams aim to progress through to the next round of Europa League qualifiers to hopefully reach the final stages of the tournament.
Last week’s first-leg game was an incredible match of football, as Tripolis blew a 2-0 lead and allowed Hibs to score three in the 2nd half and keeping the Scottish side alive for the return fixture. After Giorgios Kyriapoulos scored a first-half double for the Greek side, Neil Lennon’s woke up during the second period to win the match and also give the Hibees a huge psychological advantage going into the next game.
Despite Tripolis scoring two crucial away goals, Hibs have the upper hand, as scoring an away goal themselves would surely sink the Yellow-Blues into the ground. However, Tripolis have only lost one game this season at their home ground, so it’s clear that their home fans prove to be essential to them. Hibs’ away record is somewhat inconsistent, with draws being the predominant outcome, and excluding pre-season, the Hibees have lost three times away from home, won twice and drawn the rest since the New Year.
Hibs’ pre-season has been a successful one and including their qualifiers they’ve amassed a tally of 23 goals, failing to score once in a 2-0 defeat to Blackburn Rovers. Neil Lennon’s team is weak in defence, conceding 14 goals as well. Asteras Tripolis have a difficult fixture ahead and it will not be an easy task for them, because one slip-up will practically finish up the tie and hand Hibs the ticket through to the next round.
Triantafyllos Pasalidis is suspended and will return after the return leg due to his red card that he received last week, and Hibs boast a full squad.
Potential Asteras Tripolis Starting XI: Athanasiadis, Vlachos, Triantafyllopoulos, Pasalidis, Tasoulis, Munafo, Iglesias, Kaltsas, Madinda, Fernández, Manias.
Potential Hibs Starting XI: Bogdán, Gray, Ambrose, Porteous, Stevenson, Whittaker, McGinn, Bartley, Mallan, Shaw, Kamberi
Head To Head
- Last week’s thrilling 3-2 game was the first time the teams have ever faced each other.
Key Stats & Facts
- Hibs have scored 23 goals in their last 5 games.
- There have been under 3.5 goals in 5 of Asteras Tripolis’ last 6 games.
- Hibs have won 5 of their last 6 matches.
- Asteras Tripolis 11/17
- Draw 14/5
- Hibs 18/5
The urgency Tripolis will have to score a much needed goal could open them up to Hibs’ attack, but the same thing could happen to the Scottish side, seeing as both teams’ defences aren’t all up to scratch.
