Arsenal travel to Azerabaijan to take on Qarabag in their second game in the Europa League Group Stage. Arsenal got off to the perfect start by beating Vorskla 4-2 at the Emirates. Meanwhile, Qarabag started their campaign with a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Sporting Lisbon.

That defeat is Qarabag’s only defeat in their past 6 games in all competitions and they’ll be confident of putting in a decent performance at home against an Arsenal side who will most likely rest a few players ahead of their game against Southampton at the weekend. Past history isn’t on Qarabag’s side, the past 4 games that they have played against Premier League teams they have lost all 4 games and conceded 14 games. The team from Azerbaijan have also struggled at home against teams drawn from a higher pot that record reads as W1, D5, and L6.

With the previous stats in mind, it is no surprise to see that Arsenal are overwhelming favourites priced at 4/9 to win the match. Qarabag are 15/2 to overturn the Gunners in what would surely be their biggest win.

A win for Arsenal on paper seems pretty much nailed on (famous last words) and backing them at 4/9 isn’t going to make a working man rich. So we’ll have to look elsewhere for some value. Arsenal have been in good form in front of goal recently and 6 out of their last 8 matches have produced over 2.5 goals. An Arsenal win and over 2.5 goals in the match is 5/4 (Betbright)

Last time out Arsenal conceded 2 late goals to Vorskla and I could see the Arsenal backline being asked questions again here. Qarabag will fancy their chances of grabbing a goal and they have been in good form on their own turf winning the last 4 games, scoring 3 or more goals in 3 of those matches. I’d still be siding with the Gunners to win so Arsenal to win and both teams to score at 12/5 (Bet365) stands out as holding some good value.

Arsenal will most likely rest players with this being a long trip and we could see forgotten man, Danny Welbeck, start in attack on Thursday night. Welbeck is set to leave the club in the summer but has started this campaign well scoring 4 goals so far this season primarily in the cup competitions. Welbeck scored in the last round of fixtures and he is 9/2 (BetVictor) to score first in this match.

Team News

Laurent Koscielny and Dinos Mavropanos remain long term absentees for Arsenal while Aaron Ramsey, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Henrikh Mkhitaryan are also ruled out.

Youngster Emile Smith Rowe is available for selection after a right hip injury against Brentford.

Potential Arsenal Starting XI: Leno, Lichsteiner, Holding, Sokratis, Monreal, Torriera, Xhaka, Elneny, Iwobi, Lacazette, Welbeck.

Potential Qarabag Starting XI: Vagner, Medvedev, Rzezniczak, Guseynov, Guerrier, Zoubir, Ozobic, Madatov, Emeghara, Diniyev, Garayev.

Head To Head

This will be the first time that these teams will have met.

Key Stats & Facts

  • Arsenal have scored first in each of their last 6 competitive games with 12 of their 16 goals in that time coming in the second-half.

Betting Odds

  • Qarabag 79/10
  • Draw 7/2
  • Arsenal 7/15

The Verdict

Arsenal will face a tough task initially when they play Qarabag on Thursday but they should have enough quality in attack to deal will what could be a hostile atmosphere in Azerbaijan. The Gunner’s way of playing does give the opposition a chance to pounce of defensive errors so hopefully we will have goals at both ends.
