Monday night sees two fierce rivals go toe to toe in the Steel City Derby. Both sides come into this one in decent form with Wednesday unbeaten in their last 7 and United unbeaten in their last 6.
Since Steve Bruce took charge at Hillsborough there's been a pleasant upturn in fortunes for the Owls. The ex-Sunderland and Aston Villa manager seems to have got a tune out of Steven Fletcher who's bagged 3 in his last two including a brace last time out against Brentford. He's 5/2 to score anytime which doesn't look that bad.
Sheffield United have a marksman of their own in the form of Billy Sharp. No player has scored more goals in the EFL since the turn of the decade than Sharp and he seems to be getting better with age.
He only trails Norwich's Teemu Pukki in the goalscoring charts this season and he recently bagged a hat-trick away at Aston Villa. He's helped by an excellent team front back to front. Chris Wilder has recruited expertly and implemented a style of play that is not only easy on the eye but also highly effective. The Blades are right in the running for automatic promotion and a win here will see them overtake Leeds in 2nd place.
Jordan Thorniley and Morgan Fox will be monitored before kick off but unlucky to start. Newcastle loanee Achraf Lazaar was taken off in the last game and is ruled out for this one.
United defenders Jack O'Connell, John Egan and George Baldock are fit again. Enda Stevens has performed admirably in an unfamiliar role as a centre half and may keep his spot there.
Potential Sheffield Wednesday XI: Westwood, Palmer, Lees, Hector, Iorfa, Bannan, Hutchinson, Reach, Forestieri, Aarons, Fletcher.
Potential Sheffield United XI: Henderson, Baldock, Basham, Egan, O'Connell, Stevens, Fleck, Norwood, Dowell, Sharp, McGoldrick.
Key Stats & Facts
- Barry Bannan has picked up more yellow cards than anyone in the Championship (13).
- Chris Basham is in the top 5 in the league for cards (10 yellows, 1 red).
- Billy Sharp has 22 goals to his name this season.
- Steven Fletcher has 3 goals in his last two games.
- Sheffield Wednesday – 11/4
- Draw – 5/2
- Sheffield United – 23/20
It's a tough one on the outrights because the bookies seemed to have priced it up bang on. Both sides haven't lost in at least 6 games so I'm going to leave the 1X2 market alone.
Firstly I'm going to have a go in SkyBet's request a bet market. We can get 6/4 for over 1.5 goals, Sheffield United 5+ corners, Sheffield Wednesday 3+ corners and 10+ booking points each team.
Sheffield United average over 5 corners per game and Wednesday will be looking to attack this game too. With it being a derby fixture it could well be a feisty one too, they usually are.
I'm also going to have a punt on this 56/1 longshot utilising Betfairs ‘Same game multi' feature. We can back Billy Sharp and Steven Fletcher To Score with Barry Bannan and Chris Basham to be carded at this big price.
As mentioned in the stats above, Sharp and Fletcher are the inform strikers for both clubs and Bannan and Basham pick up plenty of cards, they're more likely here too given the rivalry.
