Both these sides have produced strong performances this season. Wigan have adapted seamlessly to Championship life, they’re recording a healthy expected goals ratio so far and probably should be higher than their current 8th position.
Paul Cook has some impressive players at his disposal. Their bench last weekend against Brentford included Michael Jacobs, Callum McManaman and Will Grigg, Championship quality.
The hosts have been chalked up at best price of 6/5 and given their underlying performance data that is understandable to a degree. However, their opposition are no mugs.
Bristol City are also posting decent figures after an underwhelming opening couple of games. Robins’ fans saw their side lose out 4-2 to West Brom which halted a four game winning streak, and there’s no shame in losing out to a team with the attacking arsenal of the Baggies.
Lee Johnson lost three of his key players in the summer with Joe Bryan, Aden Flint and Bobby Reid departing. Defensively, Tomas Kalas and Lloyd Kelly have done a steady job as replacements for Flint and Bryan. Johnson also has a knack of getting the most out of his strikers whoever they may be and the current beneficiary is Andreas Weimann who has bagged 5 already this term. Famara Diedhiou is now back in the fold after missing the first few games due to a ban, the big man has notched twice upon his return. They know where the back of the net is. If there’s any value in the 90 minute market I think it lies with the visitors.
Sam Morsy has his red card at Brentford overturned and is therefore available for the hosts. Gavin Massey and Dan Burn are ruled out for the hosts, whilst Callum Mcmanaman is a doubt.
Bristol City are without Frankie Fielding, Korey Smith or Hadeeb Adelekun.
Potential Wigan Starting XI: Walton, Robinson, Dunkley, Kipre, James, Morsy, Evans, Jacobs, Powell, Windass, Grigg.
Potential Bristol City Starting XI: Maenpaa, Hunt, Kalas, Webster, Kelly, Pack, Brownhill, Paterson, O’Dowda, Diedhiou, Weimann.
Head To Head
- These teams have met upon 12 occasions. Wigan have won 3 whereas Bristol City have won 5, the remaining 4 games ended all square.
Stats & Facts
- Both sides are seeing an average of 3 goals in their games.
- Over 2.5 goals landed in both these sides last fixture.
- Wigan – 6/5
- Draw – 5/2
- Bristol City – 5/2
Given both sides strong attacks I’m inclined to back goals here. Over 2.5 goals is priced up at 43/50 and I think that’s a more than fair price given the fact that both sides games this season are averaging 3 goals.
I’m not overly convinced with the backline at Wigan. Chey Dunkley and Cedric Kipre at centre half didn’t look too convincing in their game at Brentford last week, a game they lost 3.32-0.74 on the xG ratings. Bristol City have the quality of Callum O’Dowda in midfield to supply the likes of Weimann, Diedhiou and Marley Watkins. The DW isn’t an intimidating venue and I think the visitors are overpriced here at 5/2, I’m happy to be with them at such quotes.
