Exciting for me to get the chance to preview my hometown compatriot Stuart Carrington in the Quarter finals of the Coral Scottish Open against Judd Trump. Grimsby has a rich history of snooker with the local amateur leagues being littered with century break for the last 40 years.
In the professional game we had a few journeyman professionals like myself but it was Dean Reynolds and Mike Hallett who put Grimsby on the map of the Snooker world winning several events in the late 80s and early 90s. It is looking like only a matter of time until Stuart breaks through into the highest echelons of the game and currently his provisional ranking of 25 is moving in relentless fashion towards the elite top 16. In my opinion Stuart is playing a different class of game to his local predecessors given the standard is as high as it’s ever been and his Riga Masters semi final a few months ago was proof of that.
Judd Trump needs no introduction and you will remember he was our selection for last week’s Betway UK Championship on the back of winning the Northern Ireland Open previously. He appeared to disappoint losing to Joe Perry in the last 16 but probably in truth this was a dangerous draw against a high class performer who played well on the day.
Head To head
- Judd Trump 3-1 Stuart Carrington
- Judd Trump – 2/9 Bet365
- Stuart Carrington – 4/1 Betway
All four Quarter finals have one clear favourite against the underdog, this one I expect will be the highest quality encounter in the break building department.
Stuart in reaching this stage has made four centuries and Judd has been at his imperious best with four centuries amongst a plethora of frame winning breaks only dropping two frames. Last month at the Northern Ireland Open he demolished Stuart in similar fashion but don’t be fooled as the Quarter finals are best of 9 which will give Stuart longer to get a foothold. Stuart has previously beat Judd in his career and pushed him close at the Crucible so will not be phased and is the best player Judd has faced so far.
Safest area to have a bet in this match will be on the break markets as in their previous meetings they have played 35 frames with Judd leading 22-13 and in them 35 frames they have made 30 fifty plus breaks with Judd leading 20-10 which is a phenomenal strike rate by both players.
One amazing statistic this event is how fast each player has started in their previous four rounds. Judd Trump has made two centuries in four matches and Stuart Carrington has usurped that with three centuries in the opening frame of his four matches.
Judd Trump over 3.5 50+ breaks opened 5/6 but that was quickly bet down to 4/7 while I wrote this preview otherwise that would have been my main bet. It may be worth keeping your eye out to see whether it drifts or any other firms offer 8/11+. Sadly this leaves us with only these two small stakes bets on what will be I anticipate will be a high quality Quarter Final.
