Mark Allen the defending champion has the traditional honour of opening this year’s event against the same opponent he played twelve months previous. The provisional world No 1 comes here in the form of his life after winning December’s Scottish Open after earlier in the season taking down the China Championship.
Luca Brecel has been working hard this season trying to find a spark that left his game not long after winning the 2017 China Championship. At times he has shown the promise and class we know but his results have been erratic and until he strings an impressive run of results together we cannot expect the confidence his game relies heavily on to return.
Head 2 Head
- Allen 4-0 Brecel
- Allen – 1/3 @William Hill
- Brecel – 3/1 @Ladbrokes
Luca Brecel has played twenty best of 5 frame matches in the Championship League since the Christmas and the New Year break so we can expect him to be fully tuned up. He has last year’s experience as a debutant to draw on.
Mark Allen will come in cold in comparison and given a high percentage of his matches go over when he is an overwhelming favourite so despite fact I expect him to win it will not be in easy fashion.
Other factors we need to consider are firstly that the table will be brand new so it takes a while for the cushions to stop sliding to what the players expect. Secondly Mark Allen has the pressure, expectations and distractions that go with being defending champion.
Considering all them dynamics over 9 Asian Frames appears slightly generous at Bet365.
