Ronnie O'Sullivan the defending champion of the Coral Players Championship is now two matches away from retaining his crown in this invitation event for the top 16 players on the one year ranking list. “The Rocket” has been consistently at the business end of all this season's big tournaments actually beating today’s opponent Mark Allen in the final of the UK Championship. At forty three years of age his brilliance shows no signs of decline proving himself snooker’s “Greatest Ever” that little bit more with every event he plays. This tournament he has beaten both Barry Hawkins and John Higgins 6-4 without ever being near his brilliant best.
Mark Allen has proved himself no slouch this season, winning the China Championship and Scottish Open. He is provisional world number one which is testament to his consistency building on the foundation of winning the Masters in 2018 the Northern Irishman is now a contender for all snookers major crowns. With his number one seeding to help this week Mark Allen beat Stephen Maguire comfortably in the opening round and then in the quarter final he managed to turn a 3-1 deficit into a 6-4 victory against Stuart Bingham showing the tenacious competitor he has become.
Head To Head
- Ronnie O'Sullivan 5-3 Mark Allen
Always an interesting match up between two players who have the upmost respect for the other's ability. Last December the pair meet in the UK Championship Final in York when Ronnie O'Sullivan ran out an easy 10-6 winner when possibly Mark Allen ran out of steam a little. Throughout Mark Allen’s career he has proved himself capable of beating the very best and he showed that beating Ronnie O'Sullivan in his own backyard at the Alexandra Palace not once but twice over recent years at the Masters. The Irishman also beat Ronnie over twenty five frames in the 2009 World Championship.
At www.edwards-tips.co.uk our data tells us these two players need just over nine frames or ten frames to cover the over 50+ break line so will also have a small bet on that particular market in the knowledge they could cover in eight frames.
The other angle for a bet I like is Mark Allen to be highest break scorer given he leads that particular market head to head 5-3 in their previous encounters and we know Ronnie is going to save his thousandth century for China.
Keep stakes small and enjoy a great match.
