La Liga is contested by 20 teams, with each playing a total of 38 games over the course of a season. Teams play each other twice – on a home and away basis – and 3 points are awarded for a win, 1 for a draw, and none for a defeat. The league table ranks teams according to total points won, with the highest-ranked team being crowned as the champions when the season concludes.

A promotion and relegation system exists between La Liga and the Segunda División, with three teams swapping places after every season. The three bottom-placed teams at the end of a campaign are automatically relegated to the Segunda División, while the top two teams are automatically promoted to La Liga. The third team to be promoted will be decided after a series of playoffs between the third, fourth, fifth, and sixth-placed clubs.

Moreover, finishing in the top four secures participation in the following season’s UEFA Champions League group stage. The team in 5th will qualify for the subsequent season UEFA Europa League’s group stage and will be joined by the winner of the Copa del Rey (the Spanish domestic cup). In the case that the winner of the Copa del Rey finishes in the top 5, then the team in 6th will be awarded a spot in the UEFA Europa League group stage. In addition, the 6th place (or 7th if 6th already qualifies) team will compete in the UEFA Europa Conference League.

The 92nd season of La Liga will kick off on the 12th August 2022 and will conclude on 4th June 2023. This will be a unique campaign for the 20 teams competing in the Spanish top flight, as the FIFA World Cup 2022 will halt the season halfway through.

To cater for that there will be a seven-week break, with the league stopping after matches on the 9th November 2022 before resuming on 31st December 2022.

The season is expected to revolve around the two giants Barcelona and Real Madrid, but a few other teams will be looking to put on competitive showings, with Atlético a popular outsider. Keep reading for our expert thoughts and predictions for La Liga 2022/23!

The odds would suggest that the title picture is a three-horse race, which we think is fair enough.

You’d have to go back to the 2003/04 season for the last time one of Barcelona, Atlético Madrid, or Real Madrid were NOT crowned champions, and the likelihood that someone other than those three win the league in 2022/23 is quite unlikely. In fact, Real Madrid kick the season off as the reigning champions and Champions League winners, with Barcelona having strengthened their squad significantly over the summer, hoping to upstage their ‘El Clasico’ rivals.

  • Barcelona 2022/23 Predictions Barcelona will start a season under the management of Xavi for the first time, with the Catalans legend expected to turn their fortunes around and win the title in his first full campaign. Signings such as Raphinha, Robert Lewandowski, Franck Kessie and Andreas Christensen are very much a statement of intent. With goals throughout the side and a stable full of experience, along with exciting youngsters, Barcelona look set to lay a strong title challenge down.
  • Real Madrid 2022/23 Predictions Champions Real Madrid will be looking for a third title in four seasons this term. Buoyed by their additional success in the Champions League, they could yet again be a formidable force under Carlo Ancelotti. The team will be led by Ballon D’Or contender Karim Benzema, and if he has a campaign like last term, then Los Blancos should be right in the mix to defend their title. Additions such as Antonio Rudiger and Aurélien Tchouameni will make them sounder defensively, so this looks like it should be a positive campaign in the capital, albeit maybe not as good as the one Barcelona threaten to deliver.
  • Atlético Madrid 2022/23 Predictions We think it is fair to say that Atlético Madrid are a clear third in terms of likeliness to win the title – they are the sort of team who, if on a roll when the main two stutter at any stage, will be there to take advantage. The 2020/21 champions are always very solid defensively, so if they can deliver at the other end of the pitch they will be right there again. It is unlikely they will make up 15 points on their Madrid rivals, but they do look a comfortable third-best in the league, and could easily enjoy success in the cups in a campaign which will be split by the FIFA World Cup.
  • La Liga Relegation Predictions for 2022/23 When you look at the relegation picture in any competition, immediate thoughts usually turn to those who were promoted the previous season. This year, those three teams in La Liga are Almeria, Real Valladolid, and Girona. The latter came up through a playoff, so they are understandable favourites to go down again. Valladolid are favoured as well, but often, one promoted team survives, and it might be that Almeria are the ones to do that. Getafe, Mallorca, and Cadiz stayed up by a single point last season, and of that trio we think Mallorca could be the ones in trouble. They shipped 63 goals last term, and if they don’t improve in that area, they are going to struggle massively.
  • Summary: Your Best Bets for La Liga 2022/23 Barcelona look a standout bet to win the league with the additions they have made this season, while Mallorca represent good value with their relegation odds. The other team who could surprise this season are Villareal, the Champions League semi-finalists from last term. That run took precedence over their league form towards the end of the campaign but, with just the Europa Conference League to go at in terms of continental football, this season the ‘Yellow Submarine’ should be much more focused at home, and may regain the fourth spot which they achieved two seasons ago.
  • Barcelona under Xavi. It is four seasons since the La Liga title remained at the Camp Nou – far too long for a club the size of Barcelona. In a bid to revive their past glories, Barca brought back a club legend last term to manage the team in the form of Spanish midfielder Xavi. You get the impression 2021/22 was the chance for him to stamp his mark on the club again, and now this season is where silverware stands to be collected. All eyes will be on a vibrant Barcelona squad to see if they deliver.
  • Can Don Carlo keep the title? The first spell in charge of Real Madrid didn’t end well for Carlo Ancelotti, but he is the maestro of Madrid once again, having landed the two trophies Los Blancos crave the most last season – La Liga and the Champions League. Madrid will be expected to put up a strong defence of both, and with some exciting attacking players at their disposal, the onus is on Ancelotti to deliver more trophies.
  • Changing of the guard? It looked like the English clubs were going to take European football by storm after winning two of the previous three Champions Leagues, but Real Madrid reinforced the La Liga strength by getting the Champions League back last term, while Villareal reached the semi-finals. With Atlético Madrid, Barcelona, and Sevilla all hunting European glory this season, Spain could be set to showcase the talents of La Liga once again.
  • Big names shining bright. One of the best things about La Liga is that we get to see some of the biggest names in the game battling it out, as well as being witness to potential stars of the future. In Robert Lewandowski and Karim Benzema there are world-elite strikers on show, but then the likes of Vinicius Junior, Raphinha, Pedri, Ferran Torres, Toni Kroos, Antoine Griezmann, and Luka Modric can all still play the beautiful game to a high level.
  • Punter’s paradise. Being one of the biggest football leagues in the world, many bookies offer a tremendous range of markets, promotions, and free live streaming on every La Liga match. It truly is a punter’s dream!
  • Robert Lewandowski – The Poland international striker has left Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich for La Liga and the Camp Nou of Barcelona, and he’ll be expected to score the goals to fire Barcelona to a first title in four seasons. The 33-year-old has scored 40 or more goals in each of the last seven campaigns and will be looking to maintain that run this term.
  • Karim Benzema – The France international has to be a leading contender for the Ballon D’Or at the end of the year, regardless of what happens at the World Cup. He almost singlehandedly dragged Real Madrid to the Champions League title last season, and will be looked on to fire his side to glory again this term.
  • Raphinha – The summer signing from Leeds United will be expected to take La Liga by storm in a Barcelona front-three, which will look a lot different to the ones which have gone before it. The Brazil international was a revelation under Marcelo Bielsa at Elland Road, and will be looking for another Spanish speaking boss to get the best out of him. He could quickly become a favourite of the Camp Nou faithful.
  • Luka Modric – The veteran Real Madrid forward continues to ooze class in the centre of the park, and his relationship with Benzema was a huge reason why Los Blancos were so successful last term. Despite his advanced years, he hasn’t slowed down at all.
  • Antoine Griezmann – If Atlético Madrid are to have any chance of winning the title, the mercurial Frenchman must have a big season. Capable of a large number of goals as well as assists, the Atleti number seven is a standout player in Diego Simeone’s side.

There’s no shortage of La Liga betting markets to be found, with something to suit every punter. Be sure to sign up with top bookmakers to get the best range and value possible on your La Liga betting odds!

We’ll now discuss some of our favourite La Liga betting markets below.

Match Bets

Every week there are standout contests in La Liga, and even those matches that might not jump off the page can provide entertainment and value for bettors. The games that appeal more than most are:

  • The Madrid Derby (Real Madrid vs Atlético Madrid)
  • The Derbi de la Comunitat (Valencia vs Villareal)
  • The El Clásico (Barcelona vs Real Madrid)

These games are prime examples of when you might want to place a match bet, which means wagering on what will occur (or not occur) in a single match. The best markets for match bets are Full Time Result, Correct Score, First Goalscorer, Over 2.5 Goals, cards markets and Total Corner Predictions. Or, better yet, use a bet builder to combine these markets and craft your own custom wager!

In-Play Bets

Live betting has become an essential part of all wagering, especially on football. The ability to bet during a match unfolding in real time presents you with a great number of options and the ability to find optimum value. Given that La Liga odds will change as the game progresses, it challenges you to find that value.

For instance, if Antoine Griezmann has scored for Barcelona, there will be odds available for him to score again, and the price will be reflected on how well he is performing along with the time left in the game.

You will have access to all the markets you would receive on a normal match bet, including Full Time result, Correct Score, First Goalscorer, Over 2.5 Goals, cards markets, and corners.

Accumulator Bets

Given the amount of matches that can take place during a weekend of La Liga, punters have the opportunity to combine markets into a double, treble or multiple wager to enhance their odds. It might be a solid week to include Barcelona, Atlético Madrid and Real Madrid. However, there are a number of teams on offer, and if you pick the right ones along with the right markets, there is good value to be had. Your accumulator does not need to be focused on results, as you can also include over/unders among other top La Liga betting markets.

Bet Builder

As we touched on earlier, you can now use a bet builder to craft a bet out of multiple markets on a single game. It’s an accumulator for one specific match, although many betting sites now offer the chance to combine your bet builders into one massive bet builder to further enhance your odds.

Bet builders provide you with the use of markets such as Full Time Result, Correct Score, First Goalscorer, over/unders, cards markets, and corners.

La Liga Winner

Although it was a close affair, Atlético Madrid won La Liga for the second time in seven years after beating out Barcelona and Real Madrid for the title. Their success has been a rare outlier in the 21st century as Diego Simeone’s men, along Deportivo La Coruña and Valencia, are the only teams not named Real Madrid or Barcelona to be crowned as La Liga winners.

It’s fair to say that Real Madrid and Barcelona don’t go title-less in the same year very often. However, given the changes that both leading outfits have suffered, namely losing Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi over the last two years, their reign of dominance over Spain’s top division may be over.

Top Goal Scorer

For the first time in six years, La Liga had a new top goalscorer in 2021 following Messi’s exit from Barcelona, which presented a chance for a new man to top the rankings. La Liga has seen a drain of world-class talent leave, with Messi and Ronaldo heading to Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus (and then Manchester United) respectively. However, there remains a lot of quality in the striking ranks.

Karim Benzema topped the list with 27 goals, a whopping 9 goals ahead of Iago Aspas in 2nd place. Vini Jr and Raúl de Tomás (Espanyol) were joint third with 17 goals each. This year, with the addition of Robert Lewandowski as Barcelona’s front man, we can definitely consider him to be a top contender for the award.

It’s also worth keeping an eye on who the top goal scorer for Atlético Madrid might be, especially since Luis Suarez has left the club and Antoine Griezmann apparently having been told to drop deeper for the ball, meaning he only scored 3 goals last season.

Top Four Finish or Top Six Finish

With a top-four finish guaranteeing participation in the subsequent season’s UEFA Champions League group stage, finishing inside the top four is a terrific achievement for most of the clubs in La Liga. With Barcelona, Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid traditionally occupying three of the top four places, there’s usually one spot up for grabs.

Alternatively, you can also bet on a top-six finish and predict which teams will snatch a UEFA Europa League spot. Sevilla, Villarreal, Real Sociedad, Real Betis, and Athletic Bilbao will be in contention for both the top four and the top six. Sevilla have been on the mark in the last two seasons, but there will be stiff competition.

To Be Relegated

Betting on a club to be relegated from the Spanish La Liga implies that they will finish in the bottom three spaces come the end of the season. Usually, the three sides that are promoted from the Segunda División during the previous campaign are tipped to go down. However, this can be a very unpredictable market, especially since struggling teams usually change their manager midway through the season, causing an up-turn in form.

This year, newcomers Girona and Valladolid are favourites to rejoin the La Liga 2 next year after winning their promotion last season. Elche have very narrowly avoided relegation two seasons in a row, but their fight to stay up might prove too difficult this year. Cadiz, despite a very decent 20/21 season, were the closest to the drop last year and seem to be destined for a similar type of season this time round.

La Liga was founded in 1929 – back then known solely as the Primera División – featuring ten clubs. The league then went on to expand on many occasions, reaching the current limit of 20 clubs in 1987. Nine different teams have won the La Liga since its inauguration, with Real Madrid being the most successful, having won it 35 times. Barcelona follow behind with 26 titles, while Atlético Madrid, Athletic Bilbao, Valencia, and Real Sociedad have all won it more than once.
