Over/Under 2.5 Goals Definition

Over or Under bets mean bets which are based on the total number of goals in a match. This includes both the goals scored by the home team as well as the ones scored by the away team.

The number of goals you will be betting on will never be a whole number such as 1, 2 or 3 but always have a decimal place added to it such as 1.5, 2.5 etc. This is due to the fact that no team can ever score 0.5 of a goal and this helps betting sites avoid any doubt as to what should be considered a successful bet and what should not.

Over/Under bets range between 0.5 and 4.5 normally with some betting sites also offering extended markets up until 8.5 goals sometimes. It is also common for betting sites not to offer odds on both Under and Over the number of goals when the number becomes high.

For example, a betting site will typically only offer odds on Over 6.5 goals and not Under 6.5 because the possibility of that happening is too high for the betting site to be offering odds.

Over 2.5 Goals Meaning

In the case of a bet on Over 2.5 goals in a match, a result containing a total of 3 goals or more such as 3-0, 2-1, 1-2, 4-2 is considered to be successful. This means that any result with a total of 2 or less goals is considered a failed one. Here are some examples where an Over 2.5 goals bet would win:

  • Manchester City 2 – 1 Chelsea
  • Paris Saint-Germain 4 – 0 Lyon
  • Bayern Munich 3 – 2 Borussia Dortmund

Under 2.5 Goals Meaning

Naturally, an Under 2.5 goals bet works in the inverse way to the one above. If a match ends with 3 or more goals scored, then the bet is considered to be a failed one. 0-0, 1-0, 2-0, 1-1 are the only accepted results for an Under 2.5 goals bet. The below matches are examples of when an Under 2.5 goals bet would win:

  • Tottenham 0 – 1 Manchester United
  • Juventus 2 – 0 Napoli
  • Atletico Madrid 1 – 1 Real Madrid

Over/Under 2.5 Goals vs Over/Under 1.5 Goals

In an Over/Under type of bet, there is an inverse relationship between the number of goals in the bet and the risk attributed to an Over or and Under bet. As the number of goals becomes higher and higher, a bet on Over starts to become increasingly risky while a bet on Under becomes more probable and vice versa. As the perceived risk becomes higher, so do the odds offered.

So, when choosing between an Over/Under 1.5 and an Over/Under 2.5 goals you must try to find the right balance between the risk of the outcome and the return you wish to see from the bet.
If the teams involved in the match are normally scoring an average of 2 goals each, then the odds of the total for the match going over 1.5 will be quite low while the odds on 2.5 are likely to be more attractive.

Here, we strongly recommend paying close attention to the scoring and conceding trends of both the teams involved in the match before trying to figure out whether to place an Over/Under bet or not.

Match Result & Over/Under 2.5 Goals

When it comes to combining Match Result and Over/Under bets, we are essentially putting two single bets together into one. This is because, in order to get this type of bet correct, the punter must get the match winner and the Over/Under part of the bet right. Naturally, this means the odds on this type of bet will be higher than the odds of choosing a winner and placing an Over/Under bet separately. It is important to note that this bet includes injury time but does not include extra-time in the case of knockout matches.

Let’s take an example. Let’s say you wish to bet on Leicester City vs Man City. The odds on the Citizens to win are 8/15 and the odds on the match having over 2.5 goals are 13/20. Now, betting on Match Result (City to win) and Over 2.5 Goals gives us odds of 13/10. As we can see, it is more profitable to put one £10 stake on the Match Result and Over 2.5 Goals than to split the stake equally over 2 single bets, provided both outcomes will eventually be correct.

Match Result & Over/Under 2.5 Goals Tips

As with any bet that puts two or more outcomes together, the potential for larger winning is greater than usual. This being said, such bets come with one very important condition; that is, in order to get your hands on the winnings, all outcomes must be correct. As the number of outcomes increases, so should the level of research leading into the bet being placed.

For a Match Result & Over/Under 2.5 Goals bet we recommend looking into the following stats in order to gather the relevant information.

What situation are the teams in?

Knowing what the team’s current situation is will help set the scene for the game. This is important as it helps you keep a few key details which match statistics will not give you insights on. There are things such as:

  • Has the team got many injuries in attack or defence? That might affect how solid they are defensively or how dangerous they are in attack.
  • Is the coach under pressure to avoid defeat? Then he could set up the team conservatively to avoid conceding goals and try to get an odd goal through counterattacks.
  • Has the team been on a goal draught? This could trigger the manager to try and adapt a more attacking style of play than previous matches.

This type of research does not require a lot of effort but will help you build a better understanding of the circumstances in which the match will be played.

Note the Scoring Trends

When mentioning trends, it might become challenging to choose which trends to look at, especially given there are so many relevant trends you could be following.

If you still haven’t decided which match to bet on, then we suggest looking at the general competition stats for goals per game and having a look at which pairing of teams is most likely to give you a match a ‘clear‘ over or under 2.5 goals match. You may also look into home and away trends to get good grasp of who might have a relatively ‘easy’ win coming up.

If you have already put your eyes on a particular match, then we suggest looking into the individual stats of the teams in question so as to figure out whether to place an Under or an Over bet on the match and, if so, what number of goals would hit the optimal risk vs reward point for you.

We have put together as few figures from the 2020/21 season to highlight examples of noticeable trends to keep in mind from the top leagues in Europe.

Match Result & Over/Under 2.5 Goals Accumulators

When thinking of putting more than one Match Result and Over/Under 2.5 Goals bets together we recommend keeping in mind that despite the odds being quite attractive, the risk is relatively higher than simply putting two bets together as usual. This is because these types of bets are built on the outcome of two events – the match result (win/draw/win) as well as the total number of goals in the match. So, in theory putting 2 of these bets together is technically like putting 4 bets together.

We also provide the following stats:

Alternatives to Match Result & Over/Under 2.5 Goals

Matches for the best leagues and tournaments in the world come with a larger variety of markets normally, so there will be many alternatives available. Some popular and potentially ‘safer’ alternatives would be the following:

Both Team to Score

This betting market is exactly what you would expect it to be. It’s a simple Yes or No bet.

In this case, we suggest researching both teams and check out how many times they failed to score in a match. We also suggest looking up how many times a certain team managed to win to nil so you can figure out the team’s capability of taking control of a match. You can also check out the Both Teams to Score Stats.

Match Result & Both Teams to Score

The Match Result & Both Teams to Score is very similar to the Match Result & Over/Under Goals but rather than betting on the over/under a specific number of goals, the bet would include a match outcome and Yes/No depending on whether you think both teams will score or not.

This could potentially be a simpler way to boost odds in an acca than simply betting on a match outcome or on both teams to score separately.

Total Team Goals

The odds here are based on a team reaching a over or under a specific number of goals. In this way it is very similar to the Over/Under 2.5 Goals bet but rather than adding together the goals from both teams contesting a match, this bet focuses on just one team’s goals.

For example, in a match between Liverpool and Arsenal, you may choose to bet on Liverpool scoring over 2.5 goals or Arsenal scoring under 1.5 goals.

There is also an ‘Exact’ variation of this in which punters are invited to try and guess the exact number of goals by a particular team or even the exact total number of goals in the match.

Another variation of this would be Over/Under/Exact 1st Half Goals and Over/Under/Exact 2nd Half Goals where punters would try to guess the number of goals in a particular half. This would probably be a better bet to place when you are actually watching a match so that you may understand the tempo and rate at which big chances are being created.

If the Total Team Goals bet interests you, we suggest checking out our Total Team Goal Stats page which is constantly updated with this season’s stats from over 500 teams.

Corners and Cards

Nowadays, a bet which is becoming more popular is betting on the exact/over/under number of corners or cards to be given in the match. These can either be placed on a particular team or on the match total (similar to the goals).

These could potentially be fairly great bets to place when a match has a high tempo and crosses are being whipped into the box frequently (thus creating a higher probability of corners being given) or when a match starts to become particularly physical – like it sometimes tends to be in hard-fought derbies where both yellow and red cards are more likely to be shown.

Here we also have a Cards & Booking Points Stats page as well as a Corners Stats pages which you can refer to.
