The Champions League returns this week and Bayern Munich travel to Greece to take on AEK Athens who are rock bottom of Group E. Bayern have never lost to a Greek side in the Champions League (W7, D2) and I can’t see them running into too much trouble on Tuesday night, despite their patchy form of late.
Bayern sit in 2nd place on four points from their opening two games and they have a good record on the road. They have won 17 of their last 20 games in all competitions (W17, D2, L1), that run includes the clinical 2-0 win on the road against Benfica in the first game of the competition. 9 of those 17 victories were accompanied with a clean sheet Bayern are 6/5 to win to nil on Tuesday.
AEK are not a bad side but they are up against a high level when Bayern come to town. Athens have scored in all seven of their home games in all competitions and have only lost once. That defeat came against Benfica last time out in the competition. It was a spirited performance but they ultimately came up short against Benfica.
Bayern have a whole host of quality players and I’m keen on their Colombian playmaker, James Rodriguez. The talented midfielder has been in good form of late bagging himself a goal last time out against Wolfsburg and a peach of a goal for his country against the USA. Rodriguez has an eye for goal and I think he can find the net in this one, the Colombian is 13/2 (Sportpesa) to score first.
Throughout the 3 games that AEK have played in the Champions League there have been a combined 19 yellow and 3 red cards. I think being physical on Tuesday is going to be key to AEK staying in the game and I can see the cards being dished out again. One player who could struggle for AEK is midfielder Galanopoulos Konstantinos, the 20 year old has already been sent off in the qualifying round this year and he has picked up 2 bookings in his last 6 games, Konstantinos is 6/4 (Unibet) to be shown a card in the match.
Munich will be without Kingsley Coman and Corentin Tolisso.
Potential AEK Athens Starting XI: Huanderson, Stathis, Vafeas, Kyrgias, Orihuela, D’urso, Konstantinos, Thomas, Acosta, Triadis
Potential Bayern Munich Starting XI: Neuer, Kimmich, Sule, Hummels, Alaba, Alcantara, Martinez, Rodriguez, Gnabry, Ribery, Lewandoski.
Head To Head
- This will be the first meeting between the two sides.
Key Stats & Facts
- AEK have conceded in the first-half just once at home this season.
- Bayern have scored exactly two goals in five of their last six away games.
- Just one team has scored in six of Bayern’s seven away fixtures in all competitions this term.
- AEK 14/1
- Draw 113/20
- Bayern Munich 2/9
Bayern have been patchy of late but this game should provide them with a much needed boost. They should have too much quality for AEK and I expect that to show, most likely late in the game.
Wirral born sports fanatic who takes a keen interest in football, cricket, horse racing, NFL and Rugby Union. Over the years I have been put through the ringer on many occasions by Tranmere Rovers. Followed Tranmere for 15 years and never seen much success - that is until James Norwood's goal sent the Super White Army into dream land on 12/05/18. I've never seen a goal mean so much to so many people and so is without a doubt my best moment supporting Rovers.
