Chelsea despite picking up most of the points on offer, have been quite disappointing to watch, especially for a neutral. The season started with them playing some admirable football under Sarri however it has dwindled out in recent weeks and they are starting to find it hard to penetrate defences, without a recognised goal scorer.
Southampton have been a lot more impressive under Hasenhuttl, however they showed a less than average performance against West ham, which saw them hit by two Felipe Anderson goals and falling to a 2-0 defeat. They then have a tough run of games featuring City, Chelsea, Leicester and Everton.
Chelsea will be happy that they now have a 5 point cushion on the top 4. However this is a perfect time for them to pick up another 3 points before the European games start to get going again and they start picking up injury’s and having to rest players. Southampton will be eager to make some moves in the January transfer market to try and give themselves the best possible chance to stay up.
Chelsea are still without Victor Moses, Christensen and Van Ginkel, who have all been out for some time now.
Southampton still have only betrend out, who could possibly return to the squad in time for the match up.
Potential Chelsea Starting XI: Kepa, Azpilicueta, Rudiger, Luiz, Alonso, Kante, Jorginho, Kovacic, Pedro, Giroud, Hazard.
Potential Southampton Starting XI: McCarthy, , Bednarek, Stephens, Targett, Romeu, Lemina, Hojbjerg, Austin, Ings, Armstrong.
Head To Head
- Chelsea have won each of the last 5 meetings between the pair.
- The last time Southampton won away at the Blue’s was in 2015.
- Southampton haven’t kept a clean sheet against Chelsea in 16 years.
Key Stats & Facts
- Chelsea come into the game on the back of only one defeat in their last 7 games, against Leicester.
- Southampton have enjoyed a good start under new manager Hasenhuttl, winning 2 of his 4 games in charge including a 3-2 win against Arsenal.
- Chelsea 2/7
- Draw 19/4
- Southampton 8/1
Chelsea have been less than convincing of late, despite dominating games their finding it extremely hard to win unless magic man Hazard pops up.
For this reason I would expect it to be a cagey game and Southampton will be happy to keep it at 0-0 for as long as possible.
