Sheffield United continue their premier league adventure with a tough looking trip to Merseyside to take on Everton.

Maybe the Blades will have more confidence after seeing Everton’s really poor performance against Bournemouth last week. United were a tad unfortunate to get nothing from their game against Southampton and will be hoping to bounce back.

Chris Wilder has brought a unique and refreshing style to the premier league and I’d argue wing back Enda Stevens has been one of the most impressive players in the league so far. It will be interesting to see if Wilder sticks with David McGoldrick and Callum Robinson up front after their blank and Bramall Lane last week or whether Ollie McBurnie will get a start.

Everton look a tad light in midfield with Andre Gomes and new signing Jean Phillipe Gbamin ruled out. Fabian Delph and Tom Davies are likely to fill in but it looks like a weak point for the Toffees at the minute and it will be interesting to see if Luke Freeman can give them the run around if the ex QPR man starts.

Team News

Andre Gomes, Jonas Lossl And Jean Phillipe Gbamin are all rules out for the hosts. Richarlison has a slight knock but should be fit enough to play.

Kean Bryan is the only injury for the Blades however Billy Sharp is suspended.

Potential Everton Starting XI: Pickford, Coleman, Keane, Mina, Digne, Delph, Davies, Siggurdson, Iwobi, Richarlison, Calvert-Lewin.

Potential Sheffield United Starting XI: Henderson, Baldock, Basham, Egan, O’Connell, Stevens, Fleck, Norwood, Freeman, Robinson, McGoldrick.

Key Stats & Facts

  • Everton have won their two home games so far this season, both came via a 1 goal margin.
  • On the expected goals metric Sheffield United tank as the 6th best side in the league for ratio.
  • On the same metric, Everton rank 5th.

Betting Odds

  • Sheffield United – 5/1

The Verdict

On the face of it I think Everton look a touch short here. I’ve been impressed with Sheffield United and still think there’s more to come from them. They will give most teams a good game and their underlying performance data reflects that.

However, the Toffees do have a great record at Goodison under Marco Silva so I can see why people will be putting the Merseyside club in their weekend accas. Instead of taking this short quotes on them though I’ll boost it to 5/2 by throwing in the caveat that they win by a single goal. It’s occurred in Everton’s two league wins this season as well as Sheffield United’s two losses. There’s not much to choose between the two but home advantage edges me in favour of Marco Silva’s men.

I also think there’s a bit of juice in the 19/20 on both teams to score. The Blades are averaging just 1 goal per game at the moment but they’ve been unfortunate, xG figures say they should’ve scored 1.5 per game and if they perform at the same level the goals will come for Chris Wilder’s troops. Everton too are averaging just 1 goal per game but the data shows they should be scoring more like 1.4 goals per game. Both sides are conceding 1.3 xG per game too so the odds on BTTS look generous.
