Juventus lost their first domestic match of the season this week, crashing out of the Coppa Italia in the quarter-finals to Atalanta in dismal fashion. Juventus have been cruising all season so far and performing well below the standards they are capable of and fans are beginning to become inpatient.
Massimiliano Allegri’s popularity amongst the Bianconeri faithful is dwindling rapidly and the players look devoid of any determination or passion.
However, they are 11 points clear of Napoli at the top of the league and have dropped just four points all season. An eighth successive league title looks pretty much assured and this is usually the time of the year when Juve start to perform at their best.
But recent performances, in particular the mid-week 3-0 defeat in the cup, would suggest that all is not well with the champions and this game is one that Juve will need to up their performance if they are to win.
Parma have been the surprise package in Serie A this year and have already picked up some impressive wins against the likes of Fiorentina, Inter and Torino. They do lack consistency, however, and they would need to be at their very best, and for Juve to not quite be at the races, if they are to get anything in Turin.
The Old Lady have dropped points just once at home this campaign and have conceded just one goal in their last five home games. Having said that, Allegri is without the ‘BBC’ at the minute, with Chiellini, Barzagli and Bonucci all out injured, so it is likely that the returning Martin Caceres will be chucked straight in following his return to the club earlier this week.
The one thing Parma must be wary of, is that the champions will be hurting following their defeat to Atalanta and will be looking to make up for it. Certainly not a game that Juve will expect anything less than a convincing victory from, and anything less could see pressure mount further on Allegri.
Juve manager, Massimiliano Allegri, has some defensive decisions to make, as he is without the trio of Leonardo Bonucci, Giorgio Chiellini and Andrea Barzagli. Martin Caceres could be called upon after returning to the club this week.
Despite being linked to Juventus following their injury crisis, Bruno Alves is still expected to play for Parma.
Potential Juventus Starting XI: Szczesny; Cancelo, Rugani, Caceres, Sandro; Bentancur, Pjanic, Matuidi; Dybala, Ronaldo, Costa
Potential Parma Starting XI: Sepe; Iacoponi, Alves, Bastoni, Gagliolo; Kucka, Scozzarella, Barilla; Gervinho, Inglese, Siligardi
Juventus have won five of the last seven games against Parma, including all of the last four home games against them. Parma have not won in Turin since 2011 and only three times have they beaten Juventus away from home since 1996.
Key Stats & Facts
- Juve are still undefeated in the league and have dropped just four points all season.
- Juve are undefeated in their last 25 Serie A matches.
- Juventus have scored at least 2 goals in their last 4 league games.
- Juventus – 2/11
- Draw – 6/1
- Parma – 22/1
The 22/1 available on Parma is definitely a tempting price given how poor Juventus have been of late.
The away side did well in the reverse fixture in September, only losing 2-1 and as I have mentioned, Parma have picked up some decent results already this season.
Juve are clear favourites for the win but I would not fancy lumping on them this weekend.
3 of Juve’s last 5 Serie A matches have seen BTTS and Parma have scored a goal in 6 of their 10 away games in the league this season (including 1-0 wins away at Inter and Fiorentina).
Juventus to win and BTTS has occurred in 38% of their games this season and given how shaky they have been in recent games (4 goals conceded in last 2 games) I think the odds of around 21/10 appeal here.
