Premier League champions Manchester City host German side Hoffenheim on Wednesday, in the final match up from the Champions’ League group stages for the season.
It’s no longer a secret that Manchester City’s sights are set firmly on the Champions League, having won the premier league last season they are still chasing the most sought-after club competition title. They have started of the European campaign less than convincing, having failed to beat Lyon in both legs, aswell as scraping past Hoffenheim in round 2 with a late David Silva goal.
Hoffenheim have enjoyed their first ever campaign in the Champions League this season. After a successful season last year in the Bundesliga the side finished 3rd, behind Bayern and Schalke. They came into the tournament with zero expectations and unfortunately that has become a reality, as regardless of the result here the German side cannot progress any further.
Pep Guardiola’s side are still in need of a point to guarantee top spot of their group, having already secured progression to the knockouts. Despite their slight lacklustre Champions League performances, Man City have been nothing but remarkable in the premier league, tasting victory in every single home league game they have played this season, in fact their only loss in the Premier League came at the weekend to previous champions Chelsea. They will be looking to bounce back instantly with a win here on Wednesday.
Hoffenheim however are struggling of late, with only 1 win in the last 5 games in all comps, it could be said that the Germans have hit a rough patch in form. Under Julian Nagelsmann Hoffenheim have looked a much stronger outfit, with the young manager firmly placing his philosophies on the club. Despite recent results he will be far from worried as his side are still showing plenty of promise, in fact they have only failed to score in 2 of their previous 20 games in all competitions.
Manchester City where without key stars Kevin De Bruyne and Sergio Aguero, and it is expected they will both also miss Wednesday’s game, although Pep won’t be in a rush to field his elite players with qualification already secured.
As for Hoffenheim their towering frontman Adam Szalai is suspended after his red card against Shakhtar in their previous outing.
Potential Man City Starting XI: Ederson, Danilo, Kompany, Stones, Delph, Silva, Gundogan, Foden, Sterling, Jesus, Mahrez.
Potential Hoffenheim Starting XI: Baumann, Kaderabek, Bicakcic, Hubner, Schulz, Vogt, Zuber, Demirbay, Belfodil, Kramaric, Joelinton.
Head To Head
- The two only have the one previous outing in Round 2 of the group stage, with City coming out on top 2-1 away from home.
Key Stats & Facts
- City have only last two games this season across all competitions.
- Hoffenheim are still yet to win a game in Europe.
- City have conceded just 14 goals in the League and Europe combined. Hoffenheim have conceded 15 in Europe alone.
- Manchester City 1/5
- Draw 7/1
- Hoffenheim 14/1
Manchester City have always had questions around their defence, so their lack of ability to keep clean sheets should play into the hands for a Hoffenheim team who almost always score.
Gabriel Jesus notched himself a hattrick against Shakhtar in round 4. He is also expected to start as the main striker due to Aguero’s injury and with City’s free scoring ability he could easily bag himself a couple on Wednesday.
