Two goliaths of the European scene meet in Manchester on Tuesday night. Cristiano Ronaldo is sure to get a good reception by the Old Trafford faithful, but will his new side come away victorious?
You’d be hard pressed to ever find Manchester United as big as 12/5 at home in a Champions League group stage game but that is the case here. There’s some merit behind that pricing strategy from the bookmakers and it’s two fold. United have been disappointing this season, a W4, D2, L3 record and a -1 goal difference says it all in terms of underperformance. The other side concerns the current strength of Juventus. Their squad strength is firmly in the continents top class and they now have the competitions all-time top scorer.
Saturday saw the Old Lady drop their first points of the season in a home draw to Genoa. Massimiliano Allegri openly criticised his team for focusing too much on this midweek fixture which meant they weren’t at their optimum for that domestic fixture and he will be eager for a response here.
United impressed in their travel to the Stamford Bridge at the weekend but that last gasp Ross Barkley equaliser could have a damaging impact on morale in the camp. Goals have been a theme for the Red Devils this season and I wouldn’t be surprised to see a few more here.
So far United have beat Young Boys and drew with Valencia. Juventus have won both games against the same opposition.
Alexis Sanchez has been ruled out for this clash. Phil Jones, Maroune Felliani, Jesse Lingard and Diogo will all be assessed.
Emre Can and Mario Mandzukic are absent for the visitors.
Potential Man United Starting XI: De Gea, Valencia, Smalling, Lindelof, Shaw, Matic, Pogba, Martial, Mata, Rashford, Lukaku.
Potential Juventus Starting XI: Szczesny, Cancelo, Bonucci, Chiellini, Sandro, Pjanic, Matuidi, Bernadeschi, Costa, Dybala, Ronaldo.
Key Stats & Facts
- Manchester United have only won 1 of their last 6 games in all competitions.
- Juventus have won every game this season in all competitions apart from their last fixture against Genoa.
- Juventus have lost just twice in their last 23 games in the UCL.
- Both sides have won 5 each against each other in the head-to-head stakes.
- Manchester United – 12/5
- Draw – 23/10
- Juventus – 6/4
Juventus are understandable favourites here and the bookies seem to have got the prices spot on. However the draw stands out as the biggest price of the three, especially given the group dynamics. Both sides also drew their respective fixtures at the weekend.
I’m also happy to dip into the bookings market and SkyBet’s ’20+ booking points each team’ takes my fancy. Juventus have picked up 17 yellows and 1 red in their 8 Serie A games so far this season. Man United have picked up 19 yellows and 1 red.
Both are aggressive in their approach and with this being a big game for both expect it to be feisty.
