Newport County v Manchester City Betting Preview, Odds & Tips
- Date: 16/02/19
- Time: 17:30
- Venue: Rodney Parade
- Channel: BT Sport 2
Newport will be looking to pull off the impossible as they go in search of making Manchester City their latest FA Cup scalp.
Michael Flynn’s side have endured an indifferent season in the league and they suffered a late defeat on Tuesday night as MK Dons ran out 1-0 winners at Rodney Parade.
However, Newport have had another heroic FA Cup run, with County being the lowest-ranked side left in the competition.
Newport have overcome Met Police, Wrexham, Leicester City and Middlesbrough to get this far and they now find themselves in the last-16 in what has so far been a fantastic cup run.
Manchester City will be eager to make sure they don’t fall victim to another Newport cup upset as Pep Guardiola and co go on the hunt for their fourth win in a row in all competitions.
City have shown themselves to be ruthless against lower-league sides this season, even when featuring fringe players and the 9-0 demolishing of Burton Albion showcased this in January.
They’ve made light work of their FA Cup opponents so far, smashing seven without reply against Rotherham in round-three and hammering Burnley 5-0 in round-four.
Guardiola has made it clear that they’re not taking their League Two opponents lightly, stating that his side will “take it seriously” and how they’re aware of Newport’s impressive record against sides above them in the English football pyramid.
Newport’s January recruit Ade Azeez will be cup-tied so the striker will have to miss out, but Michael Flynn will have Mark O’Brien and Joss Labadie back as they look to have recovered from their injuries in time.
The visitors won’t have captain Vincent Kompany who is sidelined with a muscle problem while long-term absentees Benjamin Mendy and Claudio Bravo will not feature.
Potential Newport County Starting XI: Day, O’Brien, Demetriou, Franks, Butler, Bennet, Labadie, Bakinson, Willmott, Matt, Amond
Potential Manchester City Starting XI: Ederson, Danilo, Otamendi, Stones, Delph, Foden, Gundogan, Silva, Sane, Jesus, Mahrez
Head To Head
- Newport 0, Draws 0. Manchester City 3
- First meeting between the two since 1962 where City ran out 2-1 winners.
- This will be their first meeting in the FA Cup.
Key Stats & Facts
- This is only Newport’s second ever fifth-round tie in the FA Cup.
- Manchester City have lost two of their last three fifth-round FA Cup ties.
- Newport have never advanced past the fifth-round.
- Newport County 40/1
- Draw 16/1
- Manchester City 1/12
Despite Newport’s impressive record against sides above them in the English pyramid, Manchester City look unstoppable in the Premier League and if Guardiola is right and they’re taking Newport seriously, it should be a comfortable evening for the visitors.
Gabriel Jesus has scored in both of City’s FA Cup games this season and he will be looking to add to his tally of 16 goals this season.
However, Wigan proved last season that City are beatable by beating them at this stage, and Newport should take confidence from this.
