Manchester City will be hoping to bounce back from a surprise defeat against Norwich at the weekend as they make the long trip to Ukraine to face who are now familiar opposition in Shakhtar Donetsk.
These two faced off in the group stages last season and it ended 3-0 in Ukraine and 6-0 in Manchester so the omens aren’t good for the hosts here. I say hosts, they still can’t play in their own city so this match will be played 200 miles north in Kharkiv.
With the blue moon already trailing Liverpool by 5 points in the title race many are wondering if they simply go hammer and tongues for European glory that is so sought after from the club hierarchy. They should navigate through this group with relative ease and a win here would give them a strong start.
Shakhtar top their native league with a perfect record of 7 wins out of 7, boasting an impressive +17 goal difference. However the step up in class is a vast one here and they have to deal with the likes of Aguero, De Bruyne, Silva et al.
That being said, they will have seen how vulnerable Man City looked at the back and fancy their chances of scoring if they can put pressure on in the right areas. Marlos, Taison and Junior Moraes will cause this backline problems and I wouldn’t rule out the home side getting on the scoresheet here.
Taison should recover in time for the game after suffering a slight head injury at the weekend. David Khocholava is out though.
Pep Guardiola could mix up his team here. Joao Cancelo could come in for Kyle Walker and Fernandinho could come in to face his former club. Phil Foden hasn’t travelled though due to a knock.
Potential Shakhtar Donetsk XI: Pyatov, Bolbat, Krivtsov, Matviyenko, Ismaily, Stepanenko, Alan Patrick, Taison, Bonfim, Marlos, Moraes.
Potential Manchester City XI: Ederson, Walker, Otamendi, Stones, Zinchenko, Rodri, De Bruyne, Fernandinho, Sterling, Mahrez, Aguero.
Key Stats & Facts
- 4 4 of Shakhtar’s 6 champions league games last season saw BTTS land.
- 66 of Shakhtar’s last 7 champions league home games have seen both sides score.
- Manchester City have conceded in 7 of their last 9 on the road in the UCL.
- Shakhtar Donetsk – 10/1
- Draw – 19/4
- Manchester City – 8/25
Man City can’t be backed at quotes around 2/7, it’s mighty short considering they’re away from home. They should be firm favourites but given that performance at the weekend I’m struggling to see John Stones and Nicholas Otamendi keeping a clean sheet.
Therefore the 10/11 on both teams to score looks great value. Shakhtar are averaging 3.42 goals per game in their opening 7 in the league and they’ve shown themselves to be an attacking threat in this competition in the past. Having said that they did concede 3 last time out against Zorya and it will be a major shock if City fail to notch.
I’ll also get involved in the card markets here. Alan Patrick for the hosts has already seen three yellow cards this term and he will have his work cut out chasing after the likes of Bernardo Silva and De Bruyne. He’s 11/4 to pick up a booking with Bet365 and it looks like a nice alternative angle for a bit more interest.
