With the way Chelsea’s season has declined, and the increasing likelihood of them missing out on a top 4 spot, the Europa League may be the prize Chelsea and boss Sarri need to keep them on the good side of Abramovich. The winner of the Europa League is given a spot in the following years Champions League, therefore the if Chelsea were to win it, they would qualify straight into the group stages for the following campaigns Champions League.
It would be an amateur mistake for Chelsea to under estimate Slavia Prague. They just overcame Sevilla in very dramatic fashion, with a 119th minute winner. Sevilla have previously won this cup multiple times, so for Slavia to put 6 goals past them shows they mean business. They are also one win off the domestic League title, therefore have little to worry about outside this tournament.
Chelsea won this competition back in 2013 and will be keen to add another. It is fair to say they will be fairly content with this draw, as there are much harder teams they could have drawn. None the less they will be keen to show exactly what it is about them that makes them favourites to win the trophy. Slavia Prague’s main man Stoch who is also their top scorer this season will be eager to make a mark and show his previous employers what they are missing out on letting him leave back in 2010.
Slavia’s only noticeable absentee will be defensive midfielder Tomas Soucek, who is suspended after picking up consecutive yellow cards in the last two games.
Chelsea’s only expected doubt for the game is Alonso, however Sarri did say he is likely to be fit again by Thursday.
Potential Slavia Prague Starting XI: Kolar, Kudela, Ngadeu-Ngadjui, Deli, Boril, Coufal, Kral, Traore, Husbauer, Stoch, Skoda

I would be surprised if this isn’t a very tactical first leg from Chelsea. I expect them to attempt to limit Slavia’s opportunities to a minimum and look to capitalise on any chances that Slavia Prague present them. One person for Chelsea who knows how to capitalise on his chances is Eden Hazard. Chelsea’s main man produced another sparkling display on Monday against West Ham, adding another 2 goals to his impressive campaign so far. The brilliant Belgian has 6 goals in his last 5 games for club and country, and really looks to be hitting the peak form of not only his season, but also his entire career. He has shown plenty of times this season that even when Chelsea don’t look convincing, as long as he gets a chance he will take it.
Should Hazard not start I would also take a shot on Giroud to score anytime. When Hazard doesn’t play Chelsea set up in a completely different format, and with the likes of Willian and Pedro playing they are more likely to play to the tall Frenchman’s strengths and given the price on offer it is worth a shot. But as I say, Giroud would only be a viable play if Hazard does not start.
