When people think of the romance of the FA Cup they mean fixtures like this. The 3rd round of this prestigious competition sees the big guns enter the fold and it gives the chance for smaller clubs to pit their wits against the nations elite.
Tranmere are a club right at the heart of the Birkenhead community, an area that needs a football club. They were welcomed back into the league after a 3 year hiatus this season and they’ve been comfortable in the 4th tier. The Super White Army have being especially impressive at their Prenton Park base losing just the once so far, Spurs shouldn’t see this as a walkover.
Without doubt, the star man for them has been striker James Norwood who is joint top scorer in league 2 with a mammoth 16 goals so far this campaign. You feel he will be instrumental should Tranmere get anything out of this game.
Mauricio Pochettino has claimed he will field a strong side here but I’m not expecting the likes of Harry Kane and Christian Eriksen to start. Much has been made of the Argentine’s lack of a trophy as a yardstick of success during his tenure, something I personally don’t subscribe to, however it’s an ample opportunity for the North London club to capture some silverware.
Let’s not forget Spurs’ run in this competition last season, failing to beat the likes of Rochdale and Newport in first legs. Tranmere present a similar challenge and they’ll be backed by a raucous home support.
Moussa Dembele, Jan Verthonghen, Victor Wanyama, Erik Lamela and Eric Dier are unlikely to be involved for Spurs.
Shamal George has returned to his parent club but Tranmere have Ollie Banks and Luke Pilling available.
Potential Tranmere Starting XI: Davis, McNulty, Ellis, Sutton, Caprice, Harris, McCullogh, Jennings, Ridehalgh, Mullin, Norwood.
Potential Spurs Starting XI: Gazzaniga, Walker-Peters, Foyth, Alderweireld, Davies, Sissoko, Skipp, Winks, Moura, Son, Llorente.
- This is the first meeting between the pair since 2001/02.
- Tranmere are looking to reach the Fourth round for the first time since 03/04 where they beat premier league Bolton.
- Spurs were taken to replay in two games against football league opposition in the competition last season.
- Tranmere – 16/1
- Draw – 6/1
- Tottenham – 2/9
Spurs obviously have the technical advantage but I’ve got a feeling Tranmere can make this difficult for them. Spurs struggled at Rochdale and Newport last season and it wouldn’t be a major surprise if the Wirral side can take it to a Wembley replay.
I’m going to be a bit more conservative than that and back the hosts off a +2 start on the asian handicap at 16/19 with BetVictor. This bet would see us profit if Tranmere win, draw, or lose by a goal. Even if Tranmere lose by two clear goals our stakes will be returned, the only way we lose money is if Spurs win by 3 or more goals.
I’m also going to have a small dabble on a favourite of mine. BTTS, 4+ corners each team and 20+ booking points each team. It’s available at 25/1 under SkyBet’s request a Bets. It landed in Spurs’ away tie at Newport last season at a similar price and it just looks a bit too big to ignore.
