Football lover and Derby fan Tom Rodgers (@tom11rodgers) provides us with his thoughts on the appointment of new manager Phillip Cocu and assesses The Rams' chances next season.
Phillip Cocu – Who Is He & Will He Be A Success?
Ever since Frank Lampard joined Derby, there was talk of him being approached at some point in the future by Chelsea, they may of just not expected it to happen so early.
The talk of Lampard leaving for Chelsea was only increased when Derby missed out on promotion when losing to Aston Villa in the play-off final at the end of May.
After weeks and weeks of speculation and talks, Lampard finally left for Chelsea, leaving Derby looking for a third manager in three years. The talks around potential replacements included names such as Darren Moore, Danny Cowley and even John Terry.
Phillip Cocu emerged as a candidate at the beginning of July and within 4 to 5 days of talks with Mel Morris, the Derby owner, Cocu was appointed on a 4-year deal.
Who Is Phillip Cocu?
Phillip Cocu is a former footballer playing for the likes of Barcelona and PSV along with making 101 caps for the Netherlands.
Cocu is a manager who likes to play a very attacking 4-3-3 as he showed when in charge of PSV, stopping Ajax’s four year dominance and going on to win three titles in four years, along with two Dutch Cups, scoring plenty of goals in the process.
Phillip Cocu has demonstrated his trust in youth, giving game-time to players such a Georginio Wijnaldum, who has gone on to be a Champions League winner, and Memphis Depay, so Derby fans can sure be excited about the prospect of youth players coming through even more at the club.
While Cocu’s last managerial job ended in him being sacked from Fenerbahce with only a 25% win rate, this shouldn’t be looked into too deeply with a lot of politics surrounding the Turkish club and the problems it comes with.
With PSV, Cocu’s win percentage was an astonishing 65%.
Derby have finished 6th in their last two campaigns and have gone on to lose in the semi-final and final of the play-offs. Can they push on and finally get that elusive promotion?
I personally think with the right additions to the squad Derby will be in and around the play-offs but just like with Daniel Farke at Norwich, Cocu may need a season to get his squad together, put his ideas across and push for the automatic spots.
Somebody who will be looking to catch the eye of Cocu will be Jack Marriott, the lethal finisher only ended up being a bit part player for Lampard making only 19 starts and was a goal-scoring substitute in the play-off final. Derby fans will be keen for Marriott to get a good run in the side and show the incredible form he produced at Peterborough that took him to Derby in the first place.
